Hi, we’re Blue State: a partner to leading causes, campaigns, and companies, and we’re here to hasten progress.

About us

We believe there’s no force more powerful than people taking collective action on the things they care about. When an organization wants to mobilize people around a common purpose, they come to us. We don’t pretend to have all the answers, but we know where to find them: in people. We listen, learn, and uncover new insights that often surprise us and our clients — and move us toward better results. Blue State got its start on the campaign trail, pioneering the use of digital to open up the democratic process. Our new approach caught on, and we set out to do more good: raising millions more for nonprofits, shaping legislation and public opinion, and connecting consumers with brands. While our approach is continually evolving, our ethos has never changed: Make good trouble. When the status quo stands in the way of progress, we challenge it. Be curious. We ask the tough questions and let the data lead to answers. Put people first. We let the user drive the program, not the other way around. Drive real change. We obsess over outcomes and actions. If you need it, build it. We make stuff that empowers people to act on the things they care about. Walk the walk. Progress starts with us: our diversity, inclusion, and commitment to values over profits.

  • A giving milestone is coming up: DAF Day. Is your nonprofit organization prepared? If you're reading this thinking, "Uh oh, what's DAF Day?" — don't worry, the creative and strategic minds of Adrienne Bell and Anjali Gupta have you covered. They've broken down everything you need to know about donor-advised funds (DAFs) — a rapidly growing charitable giving source — and how to leverage DAF Day on October 9, including: ❓ Why DAFs matter to donors — and to your organization, 💸 How to reach DAF donors and their significant giving capacity, 💡 And, what they learned from DAF Day 2024. • We're thrilled to announce we've deepened our bench of experts by welcoming political strategist Maya Rupert to our leadership team as Executive Vice President. A nationally respected voice on progressive politics and a leader in the social justice movement, Maya has advised campaigns and candidates at the local, state, and federal levels. As Julián Castro’s campaign manager in 2020, she became the third Black woman to manage a major presidential campaign. We’re extremely fortunate that Maya will be contributing her unmatched energy and expertise to our partnerships with mission-driven organizations. https://lnkd.in/ewXyXMJs

Events based on a supporter’s location and interests! Resources for sharing! A calls page that drove millions of grassroots calls! ✅ ✅ ✅ Thanks & congratulations to Brynna Q. and Jose Nunez for their partnership on this work and the win! 🎬 Best Launch Video – Democratic! • Authoritarian rhetoric isn’t new—but neither is our resolve to counter it. In her latest piece, Noelle Howey, our Managing Director & Creative Director, Strategic Communications, expands on her previous insights with 5 MORE approaches to push back against harmful rhetoric. • Wishing you had a crystal ball to guide you through the rest of the Giving Season? We got you.  Earlier this year, as the volume of political ads began to increase, Blue State embarked upon the first of three waves of consumer research, asking, "Will the election impact donor behavior? Will donor behavior then change after the election?" What we uncovered helped us grasp the evolving donor landscape, and illuminated both challenges and opportunities for nonprofits. Our subsequent surveys — one after the change in Democratic nominee, the other conducted post-election — helped keep our insights fresh and refined our thinking, making us even more prepared for the start of the 2024 Giving Season. Now, in our latest update, we've reviewed Giving Tuesday results, isolated key trends and takeaways, and considered both alongside our donor survey data. The good news: it's not too late to optimize your programming and activate donors despite their changing behaviors. As of November 14, 2024, Blue State has chosen to go dark on X, formerly known as Twitter. This decision reflects our values as a mission-driven organization working to create positive change, and is an act of solidarity with the growing number of progressive and mainstream voices who are leaving the platform. Under Elon Musk’s ownership, X has become one of the leading purveyors of right-wing disinformation. By design, the platform uses algorithms that throttle voices that don't align with Musk's, while amplifying hateful rhetoric and conspiracy theories, including racism, homophobia, misogyny, xenophobia, and fascism. We choose to no longer participate on X in the spirit of living our values. As an agency that believes in the power of data, it behooves us to mention that X has not been a major referral source for quite some time. But even if it was, we believe that no longer participating on X is the right choice. As with all of our work, we curate our strategies for each and every client. Leaving X or reducing participation may be the right choice for some clients and not for others, depending on their goals and target audiences. If you are a Blue State client and are unsure whether you should remain on X, please reach out to your Blue State team. They can help assess the best course of action for you. We have opted to not deactivate our account in order to retain control of our username, prevent impersonation, and because, as experts in this space, we will continue to monitor how people receive information, collaborate, and communicate online. We also believe in being open to the potential for growth and change. As an agency that believes in the power of technology for good, we wholeheartedly believe in supporting and building digital spaces that prioritize both open discourse and safety, and where people can come together to share ideas, have honest conversations, and build community. There will be harder times to come that will require braver steps than this. As far as tests go, this one is easy. We hope you’ll join us in exploring what a truly free and supportive digital society can be.

  • Proud to be part of UNCF's mission to support and uplift Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and to get out the vote. HBCUs contribute $16.5 billion to the national economy. These institutions are not only educating the next generation of leaders but are also critical to economic growth and social mobility. And there is no better moment than this election year to highlight HBCUs — and how underfunding threatens their impact. From local and state offices all the way to the White House, our elected leaders provide the funding HBCUs need to thrive. We partnered with UNCF to develop a sophisticated paid media plan that included CTV, digital media, and radio in targeted local markets. In a media landscape flooded with advertising, we created a video that stands out and champions HBCUs. Watch our ad and see for yourself: the stakes are high. Go vote! A special thanks to our animation partner, Neon Zoo.
