A community Blue Bank focused on water scarcity and sustainability solutions in the Colorado River Basin.
About us
BlueCommons is a mission-driven “blue bank” tackling water challenges across the Colorado River Basin. We partner with Tribes, rural communities, and local organizations to design and finance water conservation and restoration projects that traditional funding can’t reach. Our flexible, revolving funds provide tailored support from early planning to implementation and beyond—bridging grant and federal funding gaps, building local capacity, and recycling capital to maximize impact. With expertise in law, science, finance, and policy, we help partners turn good ideas into measurable results: saved water, restored ecosystems, and stronger communities. From upgrading cooling systems in the city of Phoenix to restoring habitat in the Colorado River Delta in Mexico, our projects deliver lasting environmental and economic benefits—again and again. BlueCommons is a 501(c)(3) public charity. If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about our work, please contact us at info@thebluebank.org.

A huge thank you to Blue Forest for coordinating such an impactful and insightful all-Indigenous panel focused on climate financing for Tribes. 🌎💚 It’s incredibly inspiring to see Indigenous voices leading the charge on innovative solutions to climate change and financial empowerment for Tribal communities. The discussions on how to leverage funding for climate resilience, sustainability, and environmental justice were both thought-provoking and motivating. This is an essential step toward ensuring that Indigenous communities have the support and resources they need to protect the land, water, and traditions that have sustained them for millennia. Looking forward to more of these critical conversations and collaborations as we work together to create a more sustainable and equitable future. ✊🏽🌿 #ClimateAction #IndigenousVoices #TribalSovereignty #EnvironmentalJustice #Sustainability #BlueForest #ClimateFinancing
Last night we opened #ClimateWeekNYC with a conversation centered on what effective partnership with Tribal Nations looks like in practice, and how nonprofits can help mobilize capital for Indigenous-led stewardship. Beginning the week this way felt right: grounded in Indigenous leadership, and reminded that durable climate solutions are built when many hands and many forms of knowledge come together. Our Indigenous Partnerships Senior Manager Saraya Hamidi (Cherokee Nation) joined Austin Stevenot (Northern Sierra Mewuk) of River Partners, James Calabaza (Santo Domingo Pueblo) of Trees, Water & People, and Elizabeth Gonzalez (Huichol) of BlueCommons. The discussion highlighted how nonprofits can help bridge resource gaps by mobilizing capital and building durable pathways for Indigenous stewardship. Panelists shared models that are expanding what’s possible—from the Tribal Infrastructure & Restoration Fund supporting urgent water needs in the Colorado River Basin, to the Colfax I Forest Resilience Bond, the first tribally led FRB, which channels investment directly into community-led restoration and ecocultural stewardship. Later today, Gregg Verutes, Ph.D. will speak on reimagining U.S. leadership in global conservation, and tomorrow Zach Knight will join conversations at Sorenson Impact and 1t.org. Also in New York this week are Seren Pendleton-Knoll, Andrea Ferri, Gordon Vermeer, and other members of the Blue Forest team. We invite you to connect with us and continue the conversation.

🌊Cross-Border Solutions Create a Shared Impact 🌎 In the Mexicali Valley, small farmers face a stark reality: water shortages threaten both their livelihoods and the ecosystems of the Colorado River Delta. BlueCommons’ Binational Water Conservation and Restoration Fund is proving that innovative financing can change that story. By partnering with local nonprofits across the border, we’re helping farmers adopt water-smart practices—like efficient irrigation, regenerative crops, and agrivoltaic solar—that conserve water, restore habitats, and strengthen communities. The results speak for themselves: ✅ $2.8M deployed in 2023–24 ✅ 12,000+ acre-feet of water stored in Lake Mead ✅ Critical wetland habitats revived And the ripple effects are profound—farmers gain new income streams, communities reconnect with restored lands, and migratory birds return to thriving wetlands. This fund shows what’s possible when people, purpose, and place come together. BlueCommons is proud to stand at the border, not as a divide, but as a bridge for resilience and hope. 💧✨ Thank you to our incredible partners at Restauremos El Colorado and El Centro Luken for hosting us and sharing all of the amazing and inspiring work being done.
