We're thrilled to kick off our production of RICHARD II with the "2 For You" campaign... to bring Richard to you, with you, for you.
About us
Established in 1999, the Boomerang Theatre Company is dedicated to producing big, distinctive plays: new, classic and neglected plays. These efforts are brash, swaggering plays of big theatrical questions, a love of language and rooted in our common humanity. We annually present these projects as both outdoor productions and indoors rotating repertory seasons. These plays are produced with a “swing for the fences” mentality, which allows Boomerang to push beyond the perceived limitations for an Off-Off Broadway/Indie Theatre company. Our goal is to establish a sustained dialogue with our audience around large dramatic questions, using humor to make us think and drama to laugh at our own frailty.

Creative Strategic Planning for Theaters: It's Not as Stuffy as It Sounds Strategic planning. It can sound intimidating, but for theaters, it's simply about making smart choices for the future. It's about maximizing the impact of your performances with the resources you have, and navigating the unpredictable landscape of public funding, audience engagement, and the ever-present financial anxieties. So, what does creative strategic planning look like in practice for a theater? Here's one key concept I've been considering: Balancing Revenue and Mission: A sustainable theater needs to find a balance between financial stability and artistic vision. Ideally, your performances, events, and readings should at least break even, or even generate revenue. This allows you to reinvest in your mission and expand your impact. Programs that don't drain your resources free you up to focus on what truly matters: providing more support to playwrights, exploring new marketing avenues to reach broader audiences, and investing in the artistic excellence that defines your theater. However, rules are meant to be broken, especially when passion and artistic integrity are involved. Theater is about exploring ideas, words, and images that need to be shared. Sometimes, you have to invest in projects that might not be financially self-sufficient because they are essential to your mission. The key is to be strategic about these investments. Understand the financial trade-offs and ensure that any project that operates at a loss is deeply aligned with your overall artistic goals. Knowing when and how to take calculated risks is crucial for a thriving theater. Want to stay updated on our strategic planning process and upcoming productions? Follow our page!

The whiplash of arts management... Some days, it feels like a high-wire act without a net. You're soaring, fueled by the passion of your team and the brilliance of the artists you champion. Then, WHAM. Reality hits. Yesterday was one of those days. We received word that our Department of Cultural Affair proposal was denied, again. With the mess that DCLA is in, it's not a complete surprise, but still a disappointment nonetheless. It's a familiar struggle for arts organizations, constantly fighting for resources, often with one hand metaphorically tied behind our backs. And I know we're just one of probably thousands of arts orgs feeling that disappointment in DCLA and Mayor Adams. And yet, the very same day, a new project. A proposal for a new play that needs to be supported with time, resources and care. This is why we do what we do. So, here we are. Reeling from a setback, yet energized by possibility. We want to give artists and creative teams all the support they need, while also providing the marketing and admin support for those projects to function well in the larger world outside the rehearsal room. While also balancing a budget and making sure that the bills get paid on time (which can sometimes be a challenge). So here's how we're going to play it: We’ll be exploring every funding avenue, brainstorming new partnerships, and doubling down on our advocacy efforts. We'll cut a budget line here and there to scrape together a commission for this new project. And we'll keep extolling the virtues and need for theatre in this moment, as a balm for our hearts and an accelerant for compassion and progress. Because despite the challenges, the art must go on. And we won't stop fighting to make sure it does. #artsmmanagement #nonprofitarts #funding #art #community #artist #challenges #opportunity #passion #eyeofthetiger
