See Spot perform dynamic whole-body manipulation. Using a combination of reinforcement learning (RL) and sampling-based control, the robot is able to autonomously drag, roll, and stack tires weighing 15 kg (33 lb), well above its maximum arm lift capacity. Grippers are one of the most intricate parts of a humanoid robot, packed with actuation and sensing; they need to be durable enough to handle tough jobs, but precise enough to handle fragile items. Our engineers share how the Atlas gripper has evolved as our manipulation capabilities expand and the principles that will guide future iterations.

Remember Stretch, the roboter by Boston Dynamics, that we integrated in our logistics warehouses to help our human colleagues? Well, they're helping even more than expexcted and there will be more of them! Following the initial success at Hermes Fulfilment DACH, we've integrated three more of the AI-powered robots into our operations, and the impact is undeniable. Surpassing expectations, Stretch is now unloading up to 550 packages per hour – a 10% increase over initial targets. This isn't just automation; it's a fundamental shift in efficiency and throughput. Stretch revolutionizes our logistics by handling the physically demanding task of container unloading, which previously required employees to work in challenging conditions. The robots operate reliably around the clock, regardless of temperature, allowing our teams to focus on more complex, value-added activities. But let's hear directly from our colleague Piet, Assistent Inbound Area at Hermes Fulfilment, who works with Stretch: "Since the Stretch robots have been in use, our everyday work has completely changed and has become much more interesting. For me, it means less physical strain and more time for tasks that are truly challenging. For example, I can now focus on quality control and coordinating processes." Kay Schiebur, Executive Board Member for Services at the Otto Group, emphasizes the strategic value of AI in logistics: "The use of AI in logistics will be crucial to making processes even more efficient, flexible and sustainable. Our goal is to increase the performance of our logistics overall, because a high-performance, resilient logistics system is one of the most important keys to an optimal customer experience in retail." And more support is coming: More than one hundred Stretch robots are planned to be used in our logistics operations in the coming years. 🤖📦 Say hello to Stretch — Boston Dynamics’ warehouse superhero! Imagine a robot that never gets tired of moving boxes, doesn’t need coffee breaks, and can unload a trailer faster than your morning playlist ends. That’s exactly what Stretch is doing in warehouses right now. With its smart vision system, massive reach, and suction arm that looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie, Stretch is tackling one of the toughest (and most repetitive) jobs in logistics: unloading and stacking boxes. Why does this matter? 👉 Faster operations without the bottlenecks 👉 Safer environments for workers 👉 The ability to keep up with ever-growing e-commerce demand It’s not just about cool robotics—it’s about real efficiency and giving people more time to focus on tasks where human problem-solving really shines. Would you trust a robot like Stretch to handle your warehouse boxes? 👀

AI is rapidly enabling more robust and adaptable robotics, but AI models are only as good as the underlying data. Scott Kuindersma, VP of robotics research, shares the process of data collection, annotation, model training, and evaluation that power Atlas's autonomy. Exploring hazardous environments isn’t just about protecting people, it’s about pushing autonomy to its limits. At the Oxford Robotics Institute, researchers have demonstrated SafeEstMDP, an exploration algorithm allowing a Spot robot to autonomously navigate and map dangerous subterranean spaces. No teleoperation. No line of sight. Just decision-making under uncertainty. This work combines ORI’s GOALS and DRS labs with Boston Dynamics’ Spot and the proven VILENS localisation system - helping tackle scenarios from radioactive zones to underwater currents. Learn more about the project and the team’s work on integrating safe autonomy in real-world settings. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ebrxx3GM #OxfordRobotics #RoboticsResearch #FieldRobotics #Autonomy #SpotRobot #HazardousEnvironments #Innovation #OxfordUniversity
