Ashish Sharma, PhD, a BrightFocus Alzheimer's Disease Research grant recipient, is uncovering the connection between circadian rhythm disruptions and the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau protein in the brain—two key Alzheimer's biomarkers. This research is deeply personal for Dr. Sharma, who watched a family member "slowly fade—first losing memories, then words, until even their ability to communicate was gone." 45% of Alzheimer's patients reporting sleep problems. Dr. Sharma's research could chart a path for earlier detection and new treatment approaches. The FDA approval of the Lumipulse blood test reflects years of progress in making Alzheimer’s diagnosis more accessible, accurate, and timely. For too long, Alzheimer's diagnosis has required complex procedures that aren't accessible to most people worldwide. This blood test changes the equation. It expands access to early detection and opens doors for intervention when it can make the biggest difference. BrightFocus Foundation’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research program has long supported the development of Alzheimer’s diagnostics, including early research into blood-based biomarkers and new technologies to detect amyloid and tau pathology.
