The Wall Street Journal reports that aluminum could become "the next copper" due to surging demand—but the bottleneck is supply. Already the world’s second-most-consumed metal, aluminum is essential to EVs, solar panels, and data centers. One of its most critical and growing uses is in overhead power lines. With its low cost, high conductivity, flexibility, and light weight, aluminum is the material of choice for grid infrastructure, which is rapidly expanding to meet electrification and renewable energy targets. However, aluminum production today faces a major constraint: electricity. Converting bauxite to alumina, and then to aluminum, is extremely energy-intensive—just one new smelter can consume as much electricity annually as the city of Boston. Brimstone's Rock Refinery bypasses this bottleneck. Our process produces alumina without bauxite, using a globally abundant rock. Scaling cement decarbonization at industrial scale Cody’s path has taken him from a Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Engineering at Caltech to co-founding Brimstone, now leading a mission to decarbonize one of the world’s most carbon-intensive industries: Cement production. At Brimstone, Cody and his team are developing innovative processes to produce carbon-neutral Portland cement that is chemically identical to conventional cement but without the CO₂ emissions. Their process replaces limestone with carbon-free, calcium-bearing silicate rocks. These highly abundant rocks are found on the surface of every continent, enabling them to make their products efficiently, economically, and sustainably, virtually anywhere. Brimstone is backed by top investors including DCVC, Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Collaborative Fund as well as a team of world-class engineers and scientists proving that nextgen technology can decarbonize cement production. Citi says the aluminum market is “sleepwalking into the biggest deficits in 20 years.” Global demand for aluminum—a critical material essential for defense, aerospace, transportation, and clean energy—is projected to surge 40% by 2030. But after years of surplus, supply is lagging. Citi analysts now forecast significant shortages and price increases as the world races to meet demand. Today, China accounts for 60% of global aluminum production, while the U.S. depends almost entirely on imports—not just for aluminum, but also its key raw material, alumina. To stay competitive, the U.S. must rebuild its domestic primary aluminum supply chain, starting with alumina. At Brimstone, we’ve created a process to produce alumina from a carbon-free, domestically sourced rock.
