Developing LuSEE-Night was like solving a puzzle — one where none of the pieces were provided. The collaboration had to create each component while envisioning how they would all fit and work together under strict mass and energy consumption limits.

Today, we were thrilled to welcome Secretary of Energy Chris Wright to Brookhaven for a tour of the Lab and discussions on the groundbreaking science we’re enabling on Long Island and across the Nation. The first tour stop was the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), our giant X-ray microscope that produces light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Here, we pair AI and other cutting-edge tools with ultrabright light to illuminate the atomic makeup of materials, like catalysts that convert natural gas to liquid fuel. #NSLSII Next was the site of America’s particle colliders. After 20 years of recreating the conditions of the early universe at #RHIC, we will soon transform this pioneering collider into the #ElectronIonCollider, beginning a new era of fundamental physics research and positioning the U.S. as a leader in nuclear physics research for decades to come. We also brought Secretary Wright to our Quantum Networking Facility for a special opportunity: launching photons on our long-distance quantum network. Built in collaboration with Stony Brook University, this network is the longest quantum communication fiber optic link in the U.S. Finally, Secretary Wright got a first-hand look at one of the most unique facilities at #CFNatBrookhaven, the Quantum Material Press, which can automatically synthesize single-atom-thick layers into functional materials for quantum information science. Thank you, Secretary Wright, for visiting Brookhaven Lab, exploring our science, and speaking with our staff about the future of fundamental science at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)!

Brookhaven National Laboratory reposted this
I had a great time at Brookhaven National Laboratory last week kicking off the Energy Innovation and Commercialization Fellowship. I'm very excited to spend the next 10 weeks honing my entrepreneurial skills while commercializing a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-backed technology with my incredible teammates, Francesca Gossett and Brett Schultz. Special thanks to the teams at FedTech, BNL, and the DOE Office of Technology Commercialization who make this opportunity possible.

This summer, college and upper high school students had an immersive, four-week experience at our user facilities through the Brookhaven User Facility Summer School. They conducted hands-on research at the Tandem Van de Graaf, the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Collaboration is key to cutting-edge science at Brookhaven, and the students saw first-hand how researchers can leverage the capabilities of multiple facilities to achieve the biggest breakthroughs. Here at Brookhaven, we build and operate massive particle accelerators that enable researchers to explore the building blocks of the universe, the atomic makeup of materials, and more. ⚛️ But we also offer our unique tools to the Nation for testing the next generation of accelerators. This is the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), a proving ground for future particle accelerators. ATF provides researchers with high brightness electron beams, near-infrared and long-wave infrared laser beams, and an ultrafast electron diffraction facility.

Researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory combined advanced computer simulations with high-precision X-ray measurements at #NSLSII to more fully understand how atoms bond in plutonium's alpha phase.
