Have you heard? Last week, the Brookline Community Foundation and Brookline Housing Authority launched a one-year guaranteed income pilot, called UpTogether Brookline, that will provide 55 Brookline residents with $750/month for 12 months, no strings attached. UpTogether Brookline joins hundreds of communities in Massachusetts and nationally that are demonstrating how unrestricted cash investments lead to greater stability, opportunity, and autonomy for people experiencing financial hardship. We’re thrilled to introduce this exciting initiative, which is funded by two ARPA grants allocated by the Town of Brookline to BCF and the BHA and a private grant from BCF. We are supported by UpTogether, a national organization with extensive experience administering direct cash programs. The Brookline Community Foundation (BCF) is a proud supporter and funder of Studios Without Walls, a volunteer-run collective of artists and sculptors that turns Brookline’s Riverway Park into a free outdoor gallery each summer. Their 2025 exhibition, Dream Upon the River, featured 17 sculptures by 21 artists and wrapped up on September 1. With the support of funders including BCF, artists are compensated for their creativity, exhibitions remain free and accessible, and public spaces are transformed into places of connection and inspiration. 👉 How can local funding turn a park into a gallery? The Brookline Community Foundation has long been a supporter of educational equity in Brookline through grants and scholarships. When the Brookline School Committee, as part of its efforts to address an $8 million budget shortfall, voted to eliminate funding for the Public Schools of Brookline’s Office of Educational Equity (OEE), we shared the concerns of many educators and neighbors who value the leadership, training, and support that OEE extends throughout the Brookline school system. We listened to the community, local teachers, and educational officials and responded positively to the request to open, and contribute to, the Brookline Educational Equity Fund, whose goal is to raise $205,516 to preserve the office for the upcoming school year. Fundraising organizations include Brookline for Racial Justice and Equity (BRJE), the Brookline Asian American Family Network (BAAFN), and the Brookline Justice League. Funds must be raised by April 30 in order to meet timing requirements for possible reconsideration by the School Committee. As one of the largest funders in Brookline, we have invested more than $11.5 million into our community since 1999 to fortify the local safety net, create new pathways out of poverty, and maintain a vibrant, welcoming community. In today’s uncertain public policy landscape, we are making every effort to reach out and listen to the community, convene our partners and grantees, and monitor developments that could affect local nonprofits. As part of these efforts, BCF is pleased to co-host a special Brookline Executive Director's Roundtable on February 26 to bring together forward-looking nonprofit leaders in conversation and community. Feedback from the roundtable will be vital to BCF’s planning and fundraising this year and in the years to come.
