    Legacy compliance software forces you into rigid workflows - requiring companies to adapt their compliance policies to an external system. This poses a challenge: Compliance policies and rules pile up over years - often without clear oversight of how they interact or why they still exist. As a result, it often becomes a months-long project to test policy changes and measure its impact on fraud, efficiency and conversion. Claire Hughes Johnson, former COO of Stripe and investor in Duna, talks about this with our founder Duco van Lanschot: At Stripe, Claire helped expand into 50+ countries - onboarding millions of businesses across some of the world’s most complex regulatory environments. What worked in one region often broke in another. ‘We weren't just entering new countries. We were landing on a different planet.’ Stripe ended up investing tens of millions in building systems that could adapt to evolving compliance requirements across jurisdictions.     ‘How can we accelerate European fintech?’ That's one of the questions our Founder Duco van Lanschot, Pennylane CEO Arthur Waller, and Vivid Money CEO Alexander Emeshev tackled at Bits & Pretzels. The answer was unanimous: Make Europe one market, with the same rules across 27 countries. Right now, scaling across Europe means navigating a maze: different incorporation requirements, regulatory licenses, employee equity rules, local IBAN mandates, employment tax frameworks, and KYB compliance. Remove these bottlenecks, the panel agreed, and European fintech would accelerate dramatically. But they also called it highly aspirational. Political alignment across all countries takes decades, and fragmentation remains a daily reality.     One company told us they spent over €20 million building compliance infrastructure in-house, and it still didn't do what they needed. Building compliance infrastructure in-house sounds logical - until you're dealing with excessive technical debt, constant regulatory updates, and an unscalable system. Suddenly, you're solving complex problems outside your core competency.     What if that business you onboarded twelve months ago now has sanctioned owners or active criminal charges? Many companies rely on onboarding processes that create a point-in-time snapshot. But businesses don’t stand still: ownership structures evolve, new subsidiaries are created, and legal representatives become PEPs or land on sanctions lists. The problem with this static approach is that quarterly reviews simply don’t account for these changes. Critical updates are missed, and the dynamic nature of business is overlooked.
