“So bring your taste, bring your standards, bring your brass tacos, and start measuring what matters.” At #Button2025, Emily Wachowiak spoke to content designers’ ability to recognize and refine AI content quality. We already have the pattern recognition and the systems thinking to know when content is off and how to fix it. Now, we can apply that to evaluating AI output. (Full context: A real-life text message in the presentation showed an example of auto-correct changing the phrase “brass tax” to “brass tacos,” which is very fitting for Button.)

“How do we deal with an industry that’s moving faster than we can keep up? What happens when AI starts changing us as much as we change it? And what role should content design play in shaping that future?” During this #Button2025 talk, Amrita Saraogi advocates for content design’s role in shaping human-centered generative AI experiences.

At AI Focus Day, Laura Palotie shared how the content design team at Google Shopping developed a framework for communicating the presence of AI in clear, benefit-forward ways. Rather than leading with technical or marketing jargon, they focused on what users actually value: clarity, usefulness, and trust. #Button2025

“What happens when technology starts to feel human? Who decides how it represents us? And how do we make sure the systems we design don’t manipulate, erase, or exploit the very people they’re meant to serve. That’s where responsible AI comes in.” Sangeeta Marwah, PhD on balancing innovation that doesn’t compromise trust or safety and the role that content design can play in transparent experiences. #Button2025

Day 3 at Button is about to start, and I'm still riding high from this panel. We don't have all the answers, but we do have some really strong ground to stand on as we navigate the changes ahead. The future isn't written. It depends on things outside our control. But it also depends on how we show up. That's our opportunity. We are poised to lead, and I hope you feel encouraged and equipped! A big thank you to Kristina Halvorson for making this talk, this conference, and this community what it is. Thank you to Torrey Podmajersky for moderating this panel, and for hosting the entire conference! Thank you to Kiran Mascarenhas, Ph.D. and Jas Deogan for being incredible co-panalists and truly amazing people. Thank you to Amy Pletch and the team behind the curtain, and all the wonderful volunteers (you know who you are!). And thank you to everyone who tuned in and engaged.

This is making me think of Pavel Samsonov's brilliant talk yesterday at Button. If you're spending the time and energy to do brilliant work, you must make sure it's visible. Someone asked me if I'm a UX writer, content designer, content strategist or copywriter. I can do all of these jobs, but more importantly, I'm flexible enough to be whatever my team needs me to be on any given day. My product designers want a designer partner to brainstorm a flow with? My product manager needs a fellow strategist to translate business goals into design initiatives? I need to partner with other content designers to think of content frameworks and terminology? I'll be whatever they need me to be for all of us to be successful. To me, the biggest mark of success isn't how well I do content. It's how well I work with others and help them get to their goals. My users aren't just end users and consumers of the products I'm building; my users are also my team.
