We are thrilled to announce that Demetre C Daskalakis, MD, MPH, public health hero and lifelong champion of LGBTQ+ health will be honored at the 25th Annual Community Health Awards. Nationally recognized as a leader in infectious diseases and emergency response, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis is known for his bold and compassionate approach to public health. At the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, he commanded responses to outbreaks including measles, Legionella and the first 11 months of COVID-19. At the CDC and the White House, he directed national programs in HIV prevention, immunization and mpox response. Earlier this year, he made headlines for resigning from the CDC rather than compromise on scientific integrity, exemplifying the courage and conviction that define both our movement and our mission. We could not be more grateful to Dr. Demetre Daskalakis and his contributions to public health, and we hope you will join us in celebrating his passion and commitment at the landmark 25th Annual Community Health Awards. He will be honored alongside Alexis Michelle, acclaimed drag artist and activist, and Leyna Bloom, groundbreaking actress and model. There is still time to be in the room where it happens: get your tickets or support our mission at callen-lorde.org/cha. All proceeds help fund Callen-Lorde's continued mission to provide care for all, regardless of identity or ability to pay. 💙The 25th Annual Community Health Awards 📅 Thursday, November 6, 2025 📌 Pier Sixty, Manhattan 🕓 6-10 PM 🎟️callen-lorde.org/cha #CommunityHealthAwards #CHA #CHA25 #CallenLorde #Honoree #HonoreeAnnouncement #PublicHealth #HealthLeaders #LGBTQHealth #SupportLGBTQHealth #Fundraiser #Pride #PierSixty #NYCEvents #NYC #Manhattan #Chelsea

We're a passionate, mission-driven health center working towards health justice for LGBTQ+ communities.
About us
Callen-Lorde is the global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare. Since the days of Stonewall, we have been transforming lives in LGBTQ+ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. In addition, we are continuously pioneering research, advocacy and education to drive positive change around the world, because we believe healthcare is a human right. Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back over 50 years to the St. Marks Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project – two volunteer-based clinics that provided safe and confidential sexual health and primary care regardless of ability to pay. These clinics merged in 1983 to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed, episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.

✨ Did you know: there's more than one way to take #PrEP? Our #HIV prevention toolbox is expanding. So, let's break down what your PrEP options include... 💊 The most common way to take PrEP is orally as a daily pill. It's simple, straightforward, and a good option if you like routines. 💉 Another option is long-acting injectables. These extended-release medications are injected by a medical provider once every two months (or six months for the newest kind). 🕙 PrEP can also be taken on-demand following the "2-1-1" approach. This means taking two pills 2-24 hours before anal sex, then one pill 24 hours after the first dose and a second pill 24 hours after the second dose. Some people who are not continuously sexually active or don't want to take daily PrEP for other reasons find the option useful. However, this regimen has not been tested for all people or types of sex, so talk to your provider to see if this is a good option for you. 🩷 However you want to take PrEP, we're here to support your journey. Learn more or make an appointment at callen-lorde.org/PrEP

❓ So, who is PrEP for? Anyone who is HIV-negative! callen-lorde.org/PrEP 💊 There's a common misconception that PrEP is just for LGBTQ+ folks. Anyone can acquire HIV, which means everyone should consider steps to keep themselves, and their community, safe! PrEP is one of those steps! 💬 PrEP is safe and effective for most people, but everyone is unique. It is always best to talk with your provider, so make an appointment today, or start your PrEP journey with Callen-Lorde at callen-lorde.org/PrEP

As part of #PrEPAwareWeek, we're taking a look at what exactly is PrEP 💊💉callen-lorde.org/PrEP 🩷 PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. "Pre-exposure" indicates this medication is taken before an encounter that may expose someone to HIV. "Prophylaxis" means something done to prevent a specific disease. PrEP is medication prescribed to HIV-negative people to protect against HIV infection! 💜 PrEP creates an active defense against HIV. It inhibits the virus's ability to replicate within the body, thus preventing an infection from taking hold. However, it can take up to 21 days for PrEP to become fully effective, and you must take the medication as prescribed for it to remain effective. 💙 PrEP comes in many forms, which means it's best to talk to your provider to find the type that best fits your needs and lifestyle! 🔗 We'll talk about the types of PrEP later this week, so stay tuned! Or learn more and make an appointment to start PrEP at callen-lorde.org/PrEP

We are so heartbroken to hear about the loss of the legendary trans leader, Miss Major. From the days of Stonewall to the AIDS epidemic, Miss Major pioneered and modeled what community care should look like. Rest in power, Miss Major. Thank you for your endless contributions to our movements. We’ll continue to honor your legacy in action. 🕯️♥️ Photo by Whitten Sabbatini in The Guardian.
