Harnessing the power of the ocean to heal the climate.

About us

The ocean is an immensely powerful force of nature, and our greatest ally to reverse the tides on climate change. By studying the planet’s natural cycles, Captura designed a solution that removes CO2 from the ocean and harnesses its ability to heal the climate—a process known as Direct Ocean Capture. Developed and proven in Caltech’s laboratories, our unique Direct Ocean Capture technology runs with just two ingredients: seawater and renewable electricity. It extracts CO2 directly from seawater to be permanently stored or reused. This amplifies the natural equilibrium between the ocean and atmosphere, drawing carbon out of the air and into the ocean to rebalance. Captura’s approach requires no rare-Earth minerals, adds nothing to the ocean, and leaves no chemicals behind. It’s a low-cost, large-scale carbon removal solution that is environmentally sound.

  • Congratulations to Isometric on the certification of the Direct Ocean Capture and Storage (DOCS) Protocol — a major milestone for the advancement of permanent, scalable, and sustainable carbon dioxide removal. We’re proud to have supported the development of this industry-first protocol and to now see Captura's technology recognized within a rigorous, science-based framework that gives buyers, investors, and policymakers confidence in this high-quality carbon removal pathway. Read more about how Isometric developed the protocol and incorporated feedback from the public consultation here: https://lnkd.in/gRkgKRtf

Isometric has certified the Direct Ocean Capture and Storage (DOCS) Protocol following a comprehensive public consultation. The ocean is the largest carbon reservoir on the Earth's surface, storing around 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide naturally dissolves into the ocean’s surface through a process called equilibration. DOCS leverages this process by drawing carbon dioxide out of seawater, enabling the ocean to absorb more from the atmosphere. DOCS has significant potential to scale, by harnessing the ocean’s vast carbon storage capacity. It can also help address ocean acidification, potentially benefiting local marine ecosystems. The protocol was developed in line with the Isometric Standard, through collaboration between Isometric’s in-house Science Team and reviewers from the independent Science Network of more than 300 academic experts. Leading DOCS suppliers Captura, CarbonBlue, and SeaO2 provided extensive feedback during development and are the first suppliers signed up to issue credits under the protocol. Find out more at the link in the comments.

  • In the fight against climate change, the ocean can become one of our most useful tools. Captura’s CEO, Steve Oldham, joins host Cody Simms on MCJ's Inevitable podcast to discuss how Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) is transforming the carbon removal space.   In this conversation, Steve explains how Captura’s technology leverages the ocean’s natural ability to absorb carbon in a closed-loop process, without adding chemicals or generating waste products. He also shares how our technology is being deployed and looks ahead at how DOC can develop at scale as we look to reduce carbon emissions worldwide.   Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gvg9_UJd   #DirectOceanCapture #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction

Ever wonder why HOST Park is located at Keahole Point? It all comes down to the unique ocean conditions right here off the coast of West Hawaiʻi. This location offers incredibly rare access to both frigid deep-sea water and warm surface water just a short distance from the shore. This perfect combination is a natural engine for innovation. It’s the very reason the park was founded: to pioneer Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), sustainable aquaculture, and other groundbreaking technologies that rely on these unique resources. So the next time you see the ocean at Keahole Point, know that this stunning spot isn't just beautiful—it's the very foundation for a global hub of clean energy and ocean innovation! We’re proud to support the launch of the Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Coalition (mCDR Coalition), led by the Carbon Business Council. Our CEO, Steve Oldham, shared the following on this positive industry development: “As one interconnected biosphere, the ocean and atmosphere are inextricably linked. That means, as we build pathways to remove atmospheric carbon at scale, the ocean must be integrated into climate strategies. "The mCDR sector holds enormous promise to deliver large-scale, low-cost carbon removal, while also presenting unique scientific, communication, and policy challenges. The launch of this dedicated coalition is a great step toward giving mCDR the focused attention it deserves. By bringing together nonprofits, civil society, and industry, it can help accelerate progress in a way that’s coordinated, credible, and responsible. "Captura is proud to support this effort by the Carbon Business Council, as well as its broader mission to advance the entire carbon removal ecosystem.”

🌊 Carbon Business Council is proud to formally announce the launch of the Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Coalition (mCDR Coalition). The mCDR Coalition is the first pathway-specific initiative to launch as part of CO2BC’s new vertical support for carbon removal pathways. The coalition brings together global leaders across companies, nonprofits, and academic institutions to support the responsible growth of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The coalition helps inform and advance research, support evidence-based policy engagements, and build relationships between leaders in science, conservation, and governance. Steering Committee members include Carbon Business Council and the World Ocean Council. We’re grateful for the collaboration of our fellow conveners and observers Carbon180, Carbon Removal Canada, Cascade Climate, [C]Worthy, Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal, Ocean Visions, RMI, and the support of our members in building this new forum for marine carbon dioxide removal. 📖 Read more in the press release: https://lnkd.in/gnfXvTJH #CarbonRemoval #mCDR #OceanClimate #ClimateTech

Scaling carbon removal to meet the climate challenge is going to require deep cross-industry collaboration. No single organization can do it alone — it takes partners who share a vision for impact and bring complementary expertise.   That’s why we’re proud to spotlight Equinor, one of Captura’s key partners from the start. From leading our Series A funding to co-developing our 1,000-ton-per-year pilot plant in Hawaii, Equinor has been instrumental in advancing our mission.   We recently caught up with Lionel Ribeiro, Carbon Removal Manager at Equinor, to explore what first drew them to Captura, how our partnership has grown, and why Direct Ocean Capture is such a compelling climate solution.   See what he had to say here: https://lnkd.in/gza8vMqj   #CarbonRemoval #ClimateCollaborations #Partnerships

Captura was recently featured in a great article by Jim Giles for Trellis Group on the growing opportunity to co-locate carbon removal technologies with desalination facilities worldwide.   Captura’s Direct Ocean Capture is one such technology. It uses renewable electricity to extract CO₂ directly from seawater so it can be permanently stored—a process that can be coupled with desalination to deliver both carbon removal and clean water at the same facility.   This approach offers a compelling path for the growing desalination industry to unlock new revenue streams and enhance environmental outcomes, without disrupting their operations.   Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dze9SQy7
