🔴 ALARMING: Wars have killed 70% more civilians between 2022 and 2023. The number of women's deaths DOUBLED while children's killings TRIPLED. Humanitarian workers also continued to be targeted. 2024 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarians. The protection of civilians and aid workers in conflict zones just keeps deteriorating: ❗Over 305M people are in humanitarian need— this quadrupled in just a decade. ❗More than 280M people faced high levels of food insecurity globally ❗Cases of conflict-related sexual violence are up by 50% ❗Over 360 humanitarian workers have been killed in 2024 Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are failing. The UN Security Council adopted fewer resolutions in 2024 than in the previous 33 years. CARE joins 20 NGOs calling on the UN Security Council and Member States to take urgent action to protect civilians and humanitarians from the devastation of wars they didn't cause. CARE statement on #Gaza Humanitarian Forum Aid Distribution Proposals: In response to news reports on the Gaza Humanitarian Forum’s (GHF) proposals for distribution of aid inside Gaza, CARE has publicly and privately shared our concerns regarding the food distribution hub mechanism outlined in the GHF proposal. CARE does not support, nor has it agreed to collaborate with GHF or any form of militarization of aid. CARE continues to support the UN-Coordinated plan to immediately resume humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza as it is principled, operationally proven and immediately ready to re-start large-scale humanitarian aid delivery and life-saving services across the Gaza Strip. The entire population of Gaza is facing starvation and CARE will continue to advocate for the UN-Coordinated plan as the best, most immediate mechanism for aid distribution to alleviate the dire needs of the people of Gaza. It is essential that we do not wait for a new, untested, unscaled, and unworkable plan, when we have immediate mechanisms that can and must be deployed.

We are deeply saddened by the news of the killing of two staff members of CARE's partner organization in Gaza, Juzoor for Health and Social Development. Yahya Shihab, who worked as a nurse, and Ahmed Khilla, a driver with Juzoor, were killed along with their families in airstrikes last week on Jabalia camp, in the north of the Strip. Yahya and Ahmed join at least 430 aid workers who have been killed since October 7, 2023. They were heroically serving their communities despite the many grave dangers they faced for more than 19 months, including relentless bombing, displacement, destruction, and starvation. CARE once again calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, for the full and unhindered access to people who desperately need aid, and ultimately, there must be accountability to International Humanitarian Law. Hostages must be released.

Decreased funding = increased suffering.💔 In #Somalia, funds to support millions of people who don't have enough to eat have dropped to dangerously low levels - around only 3%. This isn’t a budget cut. It’s a cut to survival. Here’s what decreased funding means in real terms:👇 ❗ Health centers shutting down mid-crisis ❗ Malnourished children turned away due to medicine shortages ❗ Mothers walking hours, only to find empty clinics ❗ Local aid workers forced to say: “We can’t help you today.” We’re not short on solutions. We’re short on political will and financial commitment. CARE urges the international community to act now — to close the funding gap, meet the scale of this crisis, and prevent a catastrophic loss of life.

CARE International joins over 100 organisations calling for urgent help to pull Yemen back from the brink of catastrophe. Yemen is facing one of its worst years yet. War, economic collapse, and climate shocks have worsened what was already a dire crisis, while funding to support humanitarian aid has been massively reduced. Right now, the UN and NGOs have only 10% of what is needed to help millions of people in need this year. Despite major challenges, including insecurity and restrictions on aid, humanitarian organizations are still on the ground delivering food, clean water, healthcare, protection, and education. But without immediate funding, this vital work cannot continue. We urge the international community to: - Scale up flexible, timely, and predictable funding, particularly for local organisations - Increase development assistance must be scaled up to prevent communities sliding into crisis - Ensure respect for international humanitarian law, including protection of civilians and humanitarian access We cannot let the people of Yemen be forgotten. From April 29 to May 2,  Dr. Deepmala Mahla, CARE’s Chief Humanitarian Officer, visited eastern DRC—at a time when the region is facing deepening conflict and humanitarian needs. During her visit to Goma and Sake, Deepmala met with displaced women, local partners, and humanitarian actors, listening to powerful stories of survival, strength, and repeated displacement.
