Cargas Systems is an employee-owned software company where 90% of employees are direct shareholders. Chip Cargas chose not to take the financial benefits he would have received in a traditional ESOP, instead accelerating the transfer of control directly to workers through voting stock. At the end of February 2025, the last 2% of Chip's stock transfers to Cargas's 200 employees, completing a 27-year journey from one founder's vision to 200 employee-owners. But Chip didn't stop there. In 2023, he founded Tandem Center for Shared Business Success committing $1 million over five years to help other businesses follow this path. Led by Drew Mousetis—himself a former Cargas employee-owner—Tandem provides education and technical assistance for businesses implementing direct employee ownership. Drew's vision: "I see Tandem becoming the leading expert in the Direct Employee Ownership model in the United States."
