Did someone say Ravyn Lenae summer? ☀️🔥 The Chicago born singer is by no means new to the scene - releasing her first EP in 2016 and even opening for SZA a year later. Still, her latest album 'Bird's Eye' is dominating streaming, with multiple songs going viral on TikTok and landing on the Billboard charts. Thanks to the recent buzz, Lenae has gained nearly 20 million Spotify monthly listeners since the start of the year! 🤩

  • With the rising travel and accommodation costs, historically low ticket sales, and increasingly restrictive visa regulations in countries like the US and the UK, artists across the globe are facing mounting barriers touring their music. As the past few years have shown, it’s not just emerging artists opting out, either—mid-level and even superstar performers are also seeing a noticeable decline in their tour schedules. An analysis of the top 1k artists from each career stage in 2022 and 2024—defining “touring artists” as those who performed at least ten shows in one year’s time—shows a steep decline. Between these two years, the share of mid-level touring artists decreased from around 19% to 12%. Among superstars, touring numbers went down at an even higher rate, from 44% to 36%. • 🌟 Authenticity is dominating the charts in 2025 🌟 This year, we've witnessed a shift led by women like Doechii and SZA, who are building massive global audiences by being unapologetically honest. 💚 🐊 Doechii’s Grammy win for 'ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL' signaled a new era where emotional vulnerability, mental health, and identity are not just accepted in hip-hop, but celebrated. Since releasing the mixtape in August 2024, her Spotify listeners have grown by over 700%. 📲 Gen-Z is driving this shift. As the first generation raised on social media, they expect transparency—not perfection. They want music that reflects real struggles, identities, and emotions. 🎶 This trend goes beyond hip-hop. Pop artists like Billie Eilish (with brutally honest songs like “Not My Responsibility”) and Lola Young (“Messy”) are building massive global audiences by being vulnerable and real. • Did American country radio really pick up ‘Cowboy Carter’? 🤔🔊 One year ago, Beyoncé dropped ‘Cowboy Carter,’ a 27-track epic that was released with the intention of “reclaiming the black roots of country music.” 🎶 The album made history, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and making her the first black woman to top the Country Albums chart. It also won “Album of the Year” and “Best Country Album” at the Grammy’s. 🏆 Still, backlash followed, with many critics arguing that the project wasn’t “country enough.” 🌵🏜️ This raises the question - How did American country radio respond? 🇺🇸

  • 🎵 Are songs really getting shorter — and is streaming to blame? The answer: yes… but it’s more complicated than that. According to Chartmetric's 2024 Year In Music report, the average Spotify charting song last year clocked in around 3 minutes, nearly 30 seconds shorter than in 2019. While it’s easy to point to short-form content and streaming economics as the culprits, history tells a more nuanced story. 🕰️ Short songs aren’t new - In the early 1900s, 78 rpm records physically limited songs to 2–3 minutes. Tracks like “Blue Moon” and “Days of Wine and Roses” (just 2:05!) dominated the charts long before TikTok existed. 📀 Technology reshaped creativity - The rise of LPs, cassettes, and CDs in the '70s–'90s gave artists more room to experiment. Songs lengthened. Storytelling evolved. Formats like verse-chorus-bridge took hold. George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” (6:30) exemplified the CD era’s expansive possibilities. 🎧 Today’s shifts are multifactorial - From 2018 to 2024, songs across pop, hip-hop, Latin, and dance shrank by at least 17 seconds. Hip-hop and Latin saw the steepest drop — 29 seconds on average. But it’s not just attention spans or streaming thresholds, it’s also genre norms (short, catchy structures in hip-hop/pop) and viral-friendly music creation. From shellac discs to streaming data, the form and function of songs continue to evolve. Shorter doesn’t mean lesser — it just reflects the times.
