📢 Chicago Metro History Day needs more than 250 judges to evaluate projects on February 28 and March 7. Volunteer judges evaluate the historical quality of students’ documentaries, papers, exhibits, performances, and websites. CMHD is a research program for students in grades 6–12. Each year, more than 8,000 students from across the metro region research a topic of their choice connected to an annual theme and develop historical arguments that are shared with the public in a series of local, state, and national competitions. If you're passionate about history and interested in getting involved, please consider signing up to judge today: https://lnkd.in/gCbNBft8 #ChicagoHistoryDay #VolunteerChicago #HistoryMatters #EducationVolunteers

In the 1960s, Al Raby of the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO) and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) joined forces to lead the Chicago Freedom Movement, a campaign for open housing in one of the nation’s most segregated cities. To kick off the movement, leaders planned a rally in Soldier Field to build momentum, and marches with signs displaying their logo. Visit Designing for Change: Chicago Protest Art of the 1960s–70s to learn more about the movement and its distinctive symbol, which created a visual identity for the campaign and a sense of solidarity among its supporters. https://ow.ly/xCbG50XTKhB

“I’m proud to be Mexican. And I’m proud of the Mexican people who worked and lived in Pullman.” In our newest exhibition, #AquíEnChicago, you can find 89-year-old Al Quiroz’s lunchbox, apron, and keys on display. The objects tell their owner’s story along with those of the Pullman neighborhood and the historically persistent cultural presence of Latino/a/e communities in Chicago from the 1800s to the present. https://ow.ly/CKpY50Xo4Jo

"The 4,000-square-foot #AquíenChicago will examine the city’s immigrant lives with more than 700 artworks, photographs, clothing, personal items, protest posters and music. Items include quinceañera gowns for the traditional 15th-birthday coming-of-age celebrations for young women and a collection of 265 tiny terra cotta models of local landmarks, businesses and homes made in response 'to feelings of historic erasure and being under threat of displacement,' Gonzales said." Aquí en Chicago opens October 25, read more about the exhibition at the link below. https://lnkd.in/gwWu5fyQ
