Earlier this week, our CEO Jilly Stephens kicked-off our involvement in Climate Week by speaking on a Food Tank panel focusing on solutions to food waste. Through our food rescue model, we support environmental health—this year, we will prevent the equivalent of more than 25.4 million kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere—while providing New Yorkers with the food they need to thrive. September is Hunger Action Month and the need for food assistance in New York City is the highest on record. Because of recent historic cuts to federal food assistance programs, nearly 1.8 million New Yorkers could see their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP) benefits decrease, and 200,000 New Yorkers, particularly aging adults, could lose access entirely. We must do more to ensure that every New Yorker has access to the fresh, nutritious food they need to thrive. You can play a critical role to help provide food for our NYC neighbors in need this Hunger Action Month. There are so many ways you can get involved—volunteer, donate, advocate, and more. Get started at https://lnkd.in/eAYgWkse #WeAreCityHarvest Special thanks to: Plant Kween Mauricio Gonzalez-Arias, M.D. Food Council member Priyanka Naik Food Council member Kelly Kent Christine Yi Jeremy Jacobowitz

  • Welcome to a day in the life of a City Harvest driver! 🚛    Ride along with Frank as he delivers more than 10,000 pounds of fresh eggplant and celery to five partners across Brooklyn. Our trucks are on the road seven days a week providing free, nutritious food for the growing number of New Yorkers in need of food assistance. Learn more at CityHarvest.org. #WeAreCityHarvest

  • A farm in Dutchess County is growing produce entirely for donation to food pantries and soup kitchens, which they turn to for input on the food New Yorkers need the most.   Meet Will, a farmer at Tenmile Farm Foundation, one of City Harvest’s generous food donors. The farm produces high-quality, nutritious food that is difficult to get donated—including bok choy, jalapeño peppers, Chinese cabbage, strawberries, herbs, eggs, and more. They distribute this food to their local community in upstate New York and to our NYC neighbors in need, free of charge. Over the past two years of partnering with them, they have donated 324,636 pounds of farm-fresh food to City Harvest to help ensure New Yorkers have the food they need to thrive.   Learn more in the video below and support our work at cityharvest.org. #WeAreCityHarvest

  • Unsold farm-fresh produce makes its way to New York City food pantries and soup kitchens at the close of select GrowNYC Greenmarkets thanks to City Harvest volunteers. On August 1, volunteers collected 2,284 pounds of donated food—including tomatoes, carrots, greens, herbs, and bread—which one of our drivers then delivered to Children of the Light Food Pantry in Brooklyn. Join us in rescuing produce from Greenmarkets across the city to ensure New Yorkers have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. Learn more at cityharvest.org/volunteer. Many thanks to GrowNYC and vendors for their partnership. #WeAreCityHarvest

  • Sarah was working as a home health attendant when she pushed a laundry cart over a step she didn’t see. She fell and heard a loud crack. “This was the first time I’ve ever broken a bone,” she said. “I was always so careful."    A few months ago, she had surgery on her ankle. In May, her SNAP benefits stopped. Her foot was hurting so badly she couldn’t take the required documents to the office. Suddenly, she had no income.    “I've been so stressed out, all my hair falling on my head and I can't stop crying. I’ve tried so hard to get back on my benefits,” she said. She’s on the phone all day and paid someone to bring her to the benefits office.     Sarah saw a flyer with the Queensbridge Mobile Market dates. She's visited often over the past few years. “I got up early, I brushed my teeth, and I decided I was going to come down to wait on the line,” she said. “I have no choice but to come. And if I wasn’t for City Harvest, I don’t know what I would do.”    Her job as a health attendant was all about treating people well. She felt that in return from volunteers distributing produce at the Market. “They're so friendly and they make you feel like you deserve it. It's not just a handout. They treat you with respect, and I treat them back with respect,” she shared.    Including Sarah, 612 families received free produce at this Market—pineapple, onions, plantains, and peppers.    A friend recently brought her a pound of ground beef. She’s going to use the peppers and onions from this Market to make meatloaf. She misses work, she says, and really misses getting a paycheck every two weeks. “When my ankle heals, I want to go back to work again.” Support our work providing free food for NYC neighbors in need by visiting cityharvest.org/donate. • On July 4th, the President signed into law the largest cuts to food assistance and Medicaid in U.S. history. New York City is at risk of losing the equivalent of 250 million meals in a single year because of these cuts. Nearly 1.8 million of our neighbors—children, seniors, working New Yorkers—will risk having to skip meals due to the loss of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
