Public Works and Library Services may look very different on the surface, but both play essential roles in ensuring Burleson is a safe, welcoming and well-supported place to live. This quarter, we’re recognizing two outstanding employees whose actions exemplify care, initiative and a deep commitment to public service. Help us congratulate Julian Munoz and Wendy Lastovica-Alvey, our Employees of the First Quarter for 2025. Julian Munoz has been with the City since July 2017 as an equipment operator and currently serves as a Street Maintenance Worker III in the Streets division of Public Works. Known for his strong work ethic and positive attitude, Julian was selected following a standout act of kindness. Outside of regular work hours, he helped a child who had dropped their phone into an inlet box. The situation was deeply upsetting for the child and their family. Julian retrieved the phone with care and compassion, leaving a lasting impression on both the child and the parent, who later praised his actions on social media. Julian was also recently recognized for helping another department by assisting with translation services for a resident to ensure clear communication and full access to city services. His actions reflect a deep sense of community, empathy and professionalism, making him a strong asset to the city team. Wendy Lastovica-Alvey joined the City in December 2022, and currently serves as the Youth Services Librarian in the Burleson Public Library. She was nominated for her extraordinary work with Project Prom, a program designed to help teens access formalwear for prom at no cost. Wendy collected and sorted donations, spent hours cleaning and repairing the clothing, and transformed a meeting room into a boutique-like space complete with music and décor to give teens a special shopping experience. Beyond this, Wendy noticed local youth needed access to hygiene items and quietly created a resource cart where they can discreetly take what they need, no questions asked. Additionally, she stayed after hours with a patron who was locked out of their vehicle, offering comfort and security until help arrived. Wendy’s empathy and initiative are a reflection of her ongoing commitment to serve with heart. Julian and Wendy were recognized at the May 5, 2025, City Council meeting. The city's Employee of the Quarter award is based on an employee's efficiency, transparency, honesty, innovation, and customer service, all of which comprise the city's ethics statement. Both honorees go above and beyond these expectations and continue to make a difference each day they serve our community.

In this installment of our Into the Jobs series we're taking a closer look at a task that might go unnoticed but plays a vital role in keeping your water service running smoothly— changing a curb stop. A curb stop is a valve located near the edge of a property, usually in the sidewalk or parkway, that allows city crews to turn water service on or off to a home or business. It's an essential part of the water distribution system, used during maintenance, emergencies, or when starting or stopping service for a property. Over time, these valves can corrode, break, or become difficult to operate—especially in older areas. When that happens, the Public Works Water Department steps in to replace them. This helps prevent leaks, ensures quick shut-offs in emergencies, and supports the overall reliability of the water system. You may notice crews working near sidewalks or roads during these replacements. Water service might be briefly interrupted, but residents are notified in advance, and our teams work efficiently to minimize impact. Changing a curb stop is just one example of how Public Works stays behind the scenes— working hard to keep essential services flowing #publicworks #water #intothejobs
