We’re proud to share that the City of La Mesa was honored with Gold Tier recognition at the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Diamond Awards! 🌟 The awards celebrate organizations across the region that are committed to supporting sustainable transportation. A special highlight: one of our very own Public Works employees was recognized for walking to work for more than 2,000 days 👏
The City of La Mesa was honored this week during the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Diamond Awards with Gold Tier recognition! It was great to see the long lists of local governments and businesses in the region who are all working support sustainable transportation, and I hope to see those lists grow longer each year. By reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles, we can reduce traffic and parking issues, reduce smog and greenhouse gas emissions, and support our public transit options! One of our employees who works in our Public Works Department has walked to work for over 2,000 days, and he was recognized at the event as well! We love the commitment - what an inspiration!

As part of Park and Recreation Month, we hosted a lunchtime dodgeball team‑building activity that brought plenty of friendly competition and laughter to the court. 🔴🤾 10 teams faced off, but in the end, it was the Public Works Streets Maintenance Division who claimed victory. Everyone – both players and spectators – had a blast cheering, dodging, and celebrating. The winning team took home a custom‑made wooden plaque, crafted from recycled wood pieces. Team‑building activities like this aren’t just about having fun – they help strengthen communication, encourage collaboration, and boost morale. Whether on the court or on the job, these connections help our teams work better together and foster a stronger, more supportive workplace culture. ♥

Exciting news! Today, our very own Environmental Sustainability Manager Hilary Ego was interviewed by Spectrum News 1 about the City of La Mesa’s role in a new regional project to tackle extreme heat as part of our Climate Action Plan. The City of La Mesa is one of three cities, along with the The City of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista, participating in a nearly $750,000 state-funded project led by the The San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative at University of San Diego, in partnership with UC San Diego. The grant will support the creation of a Heat Action Plan for each city, along with the development of a Regional Heat Vulnerability Index and Cooling Solutions Toolkit. These tools will guide long-term strategies across the San Diego region to help save lives as heatwaves become more frequent and severe.
