  • It's time for a City of Kindness announcement, in partnership with One Kind Act a Day !! We're highlighting another Kindness in Action moment by some of our awesome South Salt Lake staff. Gualberto “Beto” Diaz and Ofaloto “Mo” Niu came to the rescue after a pedestrian fell into concrete when biking down the sidewalk. Our Public Works team was working on a concrete pour when an unfortunate incident occurred: a biker drove through the freshly poured concrete and took a fall. 🤕 As part of the crew, Beto, who was at the scene and immediately rushed to her aid. He helped the woman up, ensured she was okay, and contacted a supervisor. Mo rushed to the scene with cleaning supplies, and they both made quick time of cleaning all the concrete off the pedestrian and her bicycle. Thank you both, Beto and Mo, for taking action and being great examples of compassion and kindness in our community! #cityofkindness #kindpeoplearethebestkindofpeople #takethekindnesspledge

  • South Salt Lake recently hosted a volunteer appreciation event to recognize and thank the many volunteers who take time out of their busy lives to give back to their community. We're a small city that is able to do “big city things” thanks to the support of our active community! Whether it be operating our own animal shelter, running nationally recognized youth and family programs (South Salt Lake Recreation & Promise South Salt Lake), or throwing some of the best art events in the state (Craftoberfest & Mural Fest), we rely on committed volunteers, and our programs are stronger because of them.   Last November, Mayor Wood signed an official proclamation committing our city to volunteerism, and celebrating the effect that it has on our community, leading to our official designation as a JustServe City. Volunteering is a way to not just give back, but build strong connections and foster pride in your own community. When residents invest their own time and effort into a cause, it becomes infused with the spirit of the neighborhood, and the people who contributed. To quote the proclamation, “WHEREAS, the City recognizes that the strength of our community lies in the collective support of one another, forming the foundation of a harmonious and thriving society.” 🎉🎉🎉 Shout out to our Volunteer of the Year award winners: 🫶 Jok R., volunteering with Promise SSL 🫶Susanna K., volunteering with Recreation 🫶Cadence S., volunteering with the Arts Council 🫶Will H., volunteering with Emergency Management & CERT 🫶Natalie P., volunteering with Animal Services

President & CEO South Salt Lake Chamber & City Planner

I often get asked, “How did you end up at the South Salt Lake Chamber?” And honestly, most days I don’t have a perfectly packaged answer. What I do know is this: I didn’t get here alone. Every step of my journey was shaped by the generosity, vision, and belief of people and organizations who took a chance on a student with a dream and gave me the space to grow. When I was a student at Westminster University, one of the most formative experiences of my college career was a student consulting internship. The university paired students with local organizations willing to open their doors and that’s how I first met Gary Birdsall, former President of the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. Under Gary’s mentorship, I developed my first-ever real-world project: a strategic social media plan for the Chamber. That single opportunity sparked a path forward. During my undergrad, I worked at the Entrepreneurship Center at Westminster, which ultimately connected me to my first Chamber job: a role with the Women’s Business Center of Utah under the Salt Lake Chamber. While I was there, I ran into Gary again. This time, he introduced me to Teri Slaugh and the Women in Business Committee here in South Salt Lake. Teri invited me to join the committee. I said yes and then, over time, I became co-chair alongside her. Eventually, I was asked to serve on the Board of Directors. Then I was hired as the Chamber’s Managing Director. And now, I’m here, proud to serve as President and CEO of the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. But none of that would’ve happened without the people who opened a door. Who made time for a student. Who believed in potential. That’s why I care so deeply about our SSL Chamber Business Education Committee and our mission to create real pathways for youth. This is about more than a résumé or a career fair. It’s about helping students see what’s possible, and connecting them to businesses willing to invest in their futures. To every business owner, leader, and professional in South Salt Lake: our youth need you. They need your time. Your encouragement. Your willingness to mentor and make room. Because behind every successful professional is a group of people who believed in them first. My hope, and my commitment, is that we continue building that network of belief here, one opportunity at a time. So the next generation doesn’t just find their career, they find a sense of purpose, belonging, and possibility. Because opportunity isn’t just about jobs. It’s about hope, and a future we create together. 💛
