What should climate education really do? Sunayana Ganguly and Pallavi Phatak from Climate Educators Network wrote a piece for India Development Review (IDR) that asks this exact question — and explores what climate learning should look like in our communities, schools, and systems. The article dives into: - Why today’s climate education often falls short - What needs to change — in content, pedagogy, and systems - How local contexts, lived realities, and agency must drive the future of learning Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g6zRKvYM
Young people don’t just see climate education as important. They see it as urgent. A survey of 1,600 first-time voters reveals what many students have known all along. Climate education in India is out of touch with reality. It’s still textbook-driven, jargon-filled, and disconnected from students’ everyday experiences. This piece explores why that needs to change. From integrating local context to reimagining climate as more than a ‘science’ subject, here’s what it’ll take to prepare young people for the world they’re inheriting. What would climate education look like if it actually reflected young people’s hopes, fears, and daily lives? This analysis by Pallavi Phatak and Sunayana Ganguly breaks it down and explains how we can move from performative lessons to transformative learning. Read here to learn more about how we can strengthen what and how we teach. The Climate Educators Network is part of the working group to strategize and implement the Bangalore Climate Action Clubs — an initiative by the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell to engage schools and students in addressing climate challenges. Through this collaboration, we aim to bring climate education into local dialogue, action, and everyday learning spaces — from schools and colleges to community centres and government offices. As part of the Clubs, we’ll be co-creating resources, facilitating conversations, and helping build a generation of climate-literate citizens equipped to lead on solutions. 🌍 This is an invitation to act — if you’re an educator, student, community organizer, or institutional leader based in Bengaluru, this is your chance to engage directly with the climate crisis through collective, local pathways. 👉 Learn more and get involved: https://lnkd.in/dhUvdUJE Jayanti Ray Mukherjee Sunayana Ganguly Pallavi Phatak Shree Krishnan Rahul Chopra Gowthama Rajavelu Srinivas Alavilli #ClimateEducation #BangaloreClimateAction #ClimateLiteracy #YouthForClimate #CEN #ClimateActionClubs #BengaluruForClimate #ClimateCollaboration #EducationForChange

The youth of India are actively shaping their civic and political landscape, but their engagement is evolving beyond traditional structures. A recent survey by Youth Ki Awaaz reveals that 46% of youth engage through advocacy groups, NGOs, and social movements, while 27% leverage digital activism. However, there are many challenges —many cite a lack of opportunities (34%) and trust in organizers (25%) as barriers to participation. Political engagement is shifting too, with 26% choosing issue-based activism over party affiliation, and 86% turning out to vote in the 2024 General Elections. To strengthen youth participation, the report recommends fostering inclusive platforms, enhancing civic education, and breaking barriers through stipends, transport support, and trust-building initiatives. Schools and universities remain key hubs, with 79% of students involved in peer-led campaigns and councils. By rethinking engagement through participatory budgeting, media literacy, and youth-driven initiatives, we can build a more active and empowered generation. The conversation isn’t over! More powerful insights from #ClimatEdSummit 2025 on what schools can do TODAY to make climate education real? #Part1 The attendees had some ideas: 🌱 Teach climate like it’s essential, not optional. 🧑🏫 Equip teachers to guide students through climate challenges, not just facts. 🎭 Make learning experiential—think gardens, thrift stores, and sustainability projects. 🚀 Encourage action, not just awareness—because students learn best by doing. There’s no single answer—but every small change brings us closer to climate-literate classrooms. 💬 What’s one step YOU think schools should take? Drop it in the comments! ⬇️ #ClimatEdSummit #ClimateEducation #ClimateEducatorsNetwork
