So are AI engineers a real thing?
I am….skeptical at best on this. Recently I had the good fortune of being on a webinar with Jeffrey Queisser, co-founder of Box (shout-out to the lovely Jordana Stein, co-founder of Enrich, for hosting).
And that was a hot topic.
My take?
There is no one definition of an AI engineer – and specificity is actually pretty damn important if you want to get the right hire for your needs. Granularity is your friend, #hiringmanagers, and these valuable hires fall into one of three buckets:
1️⃣ A capable engineer, highly familiar with LLMs and relevant APIs, who can build AI tooling into your product with a minimum of fuss
2️⃣ PhD-level AI rockstars who can fill LLM modeling roles. These are unicorn types that most companies cannot (frankly) afford at the high double-digit millions these wunderkinds command
3️⃣ The AI changemaker – this could be more of a task than a job but it’s the person or team that can help inspire, seed and fully embed AI tooling awareness and adoption within your organization
So figure out what you actually need – and, no, it can’t just be “an AI engineer.” The clearer you are on what you want and need, the better hire you will eventually land.
