This week's Charitable Friday, nominated by John Pankok, PLS, is for Bike MS, the world’s largest fundraising cycling series, with more than 50,000 cyclists riding each year to support people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). Proceeds from Bike MS benefit the National MS Society, helping to fund research to find cures and improve existing treatments, empower those living with MS through self-help and peer support programs and grow the MS movement, engaging millions to raise awareness and push for change. Meet Anthony Mariani, P.E., PTOE, RSP1, Highways & Traffic Engineering Department Manager, with a passion for safer, more accessible public spaces. Anthony brings both technical expertise and a community-focused approach to every project. A defining project in his career was the Bloomfield Avenue Traffic Signal & Safety Improvement Project in Montclair Township, NJ, a high-impact initiative to improve safety, accessibility and traffic flow along a key downtown corridor. Selected by Essex County, Anthony helped lead improvements across 12 intersections, including new signal systems, ADA-compliant push buttons and countdown signals, 60+ curb ramps and high-visibility crosswalks, all while balancing traffic efficiency with pedestrian safety. 🚦 The project is part of Essex County’s broader signal improvement program, funded by NJTPA’s Local Safety Program. Since 2014, we have supported the County in securing the last three rounds of grant funding, totaling $131.5 million for safety upgrades at 150 intersections. The experience of navigating local concerns and translating them into meaningful design shaped Anthony’s path as a leader in the field and deepened his passion for building safe, inclusive public spaces. 👋 Meet Christopher Siwczak, P.E., Highways & Traffic Engineering Project Manager, one of the traffic engineering minds helping keep communities moving safely and efficiently. Since 2017, Chris has played an integral role in the Woodbridge Township Traffic Signal Improvement & Safety Upgrades Program, a long-term initiative focused on enhancing mobility, safety and infrastructure compliance across the township in New Jersey. He began his career at Colliers Engineering & Design as a designer on this very program and has grown into a leadership role; since then, the firm has managed over 18 signal upgrade and installation projects for Woodbridge Township. From early design concepts to construction coordination and final inspections, he’s been involved at every step, helping deliver smarter, safer intersections. “One of the most rewarding aspects is seeing the transformation from start to finish, it’s a powerful reminder of how thoughtful engineering can make a real impact.” - Chris Siwczak Stay tuned as we continue to highlight the people and projects that keep our communities moving. 👀 Want to see more of the Woodbridge Township Traffic Signal Improvement & Safety Upgrades Program?
