About us
Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC). CHC is one of the country’s most creative and dynamic providers of primary medical, dental and mental health services to the uninsured and underinsured. We are one of the leading health-care providers in the state of Connecticut, providing comprehensive primary care services in medicine, dentistry, and behavioral health. With more than 145,000 active patients, CHC is the health care home that works to keep our patients—and our communities—healthy. We go beyond the traditional health services to bring care wherever our patients and clients are, using innovative service delivery models and state of the art technology. We use the latest treatments and technologies within the Patient-Centered Medical Home Model (PCMH) to care for our growing patient base. We also are engaged in practice transformation work around the country through our Weitzman Institute and affiliates: National Nurse Practitioner Residency and Fellowship Training Consortium, the National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement, and ConferMED.

Veterans Day, which is less than a month away, is a time to honor and reflect on those who’ve served. Yet statistics reveal a troubling reality: Veterans are dying by suicide at 1.5 times the rate of the general population. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death among veterans under 45. Craig Bryan, clinical psychologist, Iraq War veteran, and author of “Rethinking Suicide: Why Prevention Fails and How We Can Do Better,” joined hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter in June, 2024 to share critical research on rapid escalation of suicidal crises and the life-saving potential of brief cognitive behavioral therapy (which has shown reductions in attempts of up to 60% in trials), plus real-world ideas for change. Health center leaders from Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) came together last week at HCN Headquarters for the Clinical Leaders Workshop, hosted by AllianceChicago and Health Choice Network. This bi-annual event brings together clinical, nursing, operational, and quality leaders to share experiences, exchange best practices, and strengthen knowledge across clinical operations, quality performance, and leadership. The workshop serves as a space for collaboration, learning, and continued growth in support of the vital work health centers do every day. We were honored to have Mary Blankson, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer at Community Health Center, Inc., who flew in to present and share valuable insights on leadership and advancing clinical excellence. A special thank-you to Dr. Timothy Long, MD and Dr. Warria Esmond for facilitating meaningful discussions, and to all attendees for your engagement and commitment to advancing excellence in community health. #HCN #AC #FQHCs #HCCNs #CHCs #CLW #ClinicalLeaders #ClinicalLeadership #Healthcare #ValueCHCs #SupportingourHealthCenters #OneTeamOneMission

$44 billion in drugs that help Americans are purchased through a little-known federal discount program called 340B. The program is recognized for successfully helping hospitals, community health centers and others that fund care for low-income patients. But that program is now facing big challenges from drugmakers, and the current government shutdown has brought new uncertainty. Reporters William Newton, 340B Report and David Lim, POLITICO, sit down with our hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter to explain how what began as a quiet effort to help safety-net providers has grown into a national discussion about drug prices and access to care. Nurse practitioners (NPs) now comprise 47% of all US primary care clinicians. Decades of research confirms the safety, quality, and effectiveness of care provided by NPs, and patients’ approval of them. Yet it’s challenging to recruit and retain NPs in primary care. In addition to barriers reported by other primary care clinicians, NPs face: variation in state practice regulations and institutional policies; inadequate reimbursement rates from Medicare and many private insurers; and a lack of federal financing for training, support, and mentoring. In a new report, Jessica McCann, MPH, CPH of the Weitzman Institute and Margaret Flinter, APRN, PHD, FAAN of the Community Health Center, Inc. and the Moses/Weitzman Health System assess these barriers and identify opportunities for state policymakers and others to fully realize the potential of NPs to provide high-quality and effective team-based primary care.
