"Our DNA is materials testing," explains David May, director of Faserinstitut Bremen. The Bremen, Germany-based research institute (known as FIBRE) got its start testing cotton textiles, evolving over time to about 75% of its research in composite materials (especially thermoplastics). CW had the chance to tour one of FIBRE's sites earlier this year, at the ECOMAT (Center for Eco-efficient Materials & Technologies) in Bremen. Here, the company has recently put in a cryogenic testing lab to support its aviation partners' work toward hydrogen-based propulsion, and engages in a variety of projects related to thermoplastics repair, tailored fiber placement, bio-based composites, pultrusion and more.
