Deep in the mountains of Palawan, scientists are capturing what few people ever see: the secret lives of the Philippines’ rarest species. The mountains and islands of the Philippine archipelago harbor extraordinary numbers of species found nowhere else on Earth. Yet nearly a quarter of the country’s vertebrates are on the brink of extinction. A recent Conservation International Philippines expedition to the rugged highlands of Mount Mantalingahan offers signs of hope: the area is still pulsing with rare wildlife. https://lnkd.in/e8hk6pmE

After two years of rigorous research and global stakeholder collaboration, the Social Responsibility Assessment Tool for the Seafood Sector (SRA) 2.0 is now live on the refreshed Roadmap for Improving Seafood Ethics (RISE) platform, setting a new benchmark for how companies assess and address human and labor rights risks in seafood supply chains. As human rights due diligence becomes a global imperative, SRA 2.0 and the RISE platform offer seafood buyers and suppliers a clear, credible, and actionable path to identify risks, implement improvements and champion the rights of workers and seafood-dependent communities across the sector. “[Biodiversity] underpins the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the stability of ecosystems that regulate climate and ultimately our wellbeing. For health professionals, this means that safeguarding biodiversity is not simply an environmental concern but a foundational element of preventive and clinical care.” Neil Vora, MD, senior advisor for One Health at Conservation International, and Chris Walzer, executive director of Health at the Wildlife Conservation Society, explore why climate and health strategies must address to biodiversity crisis. https://lnkd.in/etNc2Cvg

Last week, the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body adopted the rules on permanence. And while the adopted version is an improvement, there are still challenges that must be addressed and more work to be done to ensure carbon markets support nature-based solutions. “Science tells us that reducing emissions, whether by burning fewer fossil fuels or not logging a forest, for any period of time will have a positive impact on the climate. Meeting global climate goals will require every tool in the toolkit." said Lina Barrera, Conservation International senior vice president, Center for Policy and Incentives. We need to use and improve upon immediately available solutions. “Nature holds 30% of the solution for meeting global climate goals but only receives about 3% of global climate funding.” Excluding nature projects, she added, “would widen a finance gap that needs to be filled.” https://lnkd.in/eB6EwaJm

At Maido — the Lima restaurant recently crowned the best in the world — one of the star dishes is paiche, a giant prehistoric river fish. Its journey to the table begins on a small family farm deep in Peru’s Amazon. At the farm, called Pucayagro, they once cleared the forest for rice paddies and cattle. The result was land drained of its rivers and wetlands, and wildlife that were forced to migrate elsewhere. But in recent years, Conservación Internacional Perú has helped bring about a dramatic transformation on the farm. Today, Pucayagro is a thriving sustainable fish farm — a form of aquaculture — run by a family that is determined to show other farmers that the same change is possible. https://lnkd.in/egzgZRRN
