Understanding how chronic lung disease affects individuals’ lives is important for identifying knowing research gaps and opportunities. In a recently published study, researchers evaluated other previously published studies in which people with COPD shared their experiences through interviews, group discussions, or online forums. In these studies, participants talked about their symptoms, how these symptoms affect their daily tasks, and how their physical struggles with COPD affect their emotional and social lives. Read more about what was learned in A Metasynthesis of Qualitative Literature to Inform the Selection of Meaningful and Measurable Health Concepts for Clinical Trials in COPD in the latest issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. Chronic lung diseases can affect men and women differently, but we do not fully understand these differences. COPD Foundation researchers surveyed over 600 people living with COPD, bronchiectasis, or nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), to better understand their symptoms and experiences with diagnosis and treatment. Most participants were women, and the majority had COPD. The results showed that men and women experience chronic lung disease differently. For example, women with COPD sought medical care sooner after symptoms started compared to men but were less likely to have their diagnosis clearly explained by a doctor. Read about more of the survey results in Navigating COPD and Bronchiectasis: A COPD Foundation Survey of Differences in Patient-Perceived Health Care Experiences by Sex in the latest issue of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation.
