Wow! Optical laser space communications FTW!
❗ Second deep-space optical communication link achieved! On 21 July, ESA succeeded again in establishing a laser communication link with NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) experiment aboard its Psyche mission, now 265 million kilometres from Earth. “During this week's link, we focused on providing the most stable ground laser beacon possible to the spacecraft, so it could reliably send data down to our ground laser receiver. This worked like a charm, and we were able to continuously decode data after the initial link acquisition,” says Clemens Heese, ESA’s Head of Optical Technologies and ESA’s DSOC demonstration project manager. 🎶 𝐈𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐞, 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐠𝐞 The transmission campaign begins in Greece, where ESA transformed two observatories into high-precision optical ground stations: one to transmit, one to receive. At the Kryoneri Observatory, ESA teams installed the Ground Laser Transmitter, which is capable to send a laser beam with pinpoint accuracy across interplanetary distances. Key specs: 🔸 Five high-power lasers with ultra-precise steering controllers. 🔸 A custom 20-foot container with a lifting platform to shield equipment from sunlight. 🔸 A streamlined deployment process enabling full setup - laser, wiring, cooling - in just one day. Winning this was not easy. This is the culmination of countless competitions and exercises in some cases going back to 2020. Our team, partners and the Army have been rock solid along the way committed to moving fast and delivering to the warfighter. Of note, at no point along the way was our team of non traditional partners dismissed or “otherized” as not being able to deliver at pace and at scale. The fact that this felt “normal” all along the way is a tribute to the last two decades of work by non traditionals and enlightened service men and women cracking doors wide open for new ways of doing business. We now stand positioned to deliver with the right team with the right technology at the right time. Onwards!
Today, the U.S. Army announced an important update in the Army’s Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) effort. The U.S. Army will continue experimentation and prototyping via an Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreement to Team Anduril on behalf of Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications, and Network (PEO C3N), to deliver a prototype architecture for the Army’s Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) initiative to the 4th Infantry Division. Aligned with the Army’s Continuous Transformation efforts and building upon Transformation in Contact (TiC) and Command and Control (C2) Fix initiatives, NGC2 is a new approach to enable commanders to make more, better, and faster decisions than the enemy. NGC2 is not a single program or technology, but an ecosystem delivered as a “technology stack” of four layers including transport, infrastructure, data, and applications. This approach integrates information from previously siloed warfighting systems and enables the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to rapidly organize and analyze data to improve commanders’ decision advantage.
