Lung cancer screening is one of the most underutilized yet life-saving tools in health care today. Nationally, only 16% of eligible individuals get screened, but UR Medicine’s primary care network recently achieved a remarkable 72% screening rate—more than doubling their previous rate of 33%. How did they do it? Through the power of multidisciplinary collaboration. “Collaboration among primary care, radiology, and pulmonary teams enabled a seamless flow of information and streamlined patients’ journeys," said Robert Fortuna, MD, MPH, professor of Primary Care and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who was integral to the effort. "My hope is that by sharing our success, others can adopt and build upon what we’re doing to save more lives nationwide.” This program is a shining example of how multidisciplinary coordinated care saves lives. Other key players in developing the program include Ben Wandtke, MD, MS, Michael Nead, MD, PhD, Stephen Judge, MD, Cherish Zaccari, MS, Mary Jo Evans, and Kevin Fiscella, MD, MPH. Gabriella Logrono, MD, assistant professor of Hospital Medicine, visited Ibero American Action League's Centro de Oro last week to educate older Latino adults about arthritis as part of the center's Charlas de Salud (Health Talks) series. Logrono delivered the talk in Spanish and led the group in hand exercises to strengthen hand muscles, alleviate arthritis pain, and improve range of motion. Participants loved the interactive session!
