Back-to-back storms fueled by Typhoon Halong have devastated western Alaska, displacing more than 1,000 people and causing widespread damage to homes and infrastructure. Winds over 100 mph and record tidal surges hit hardest in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, including Kwigillingok, Kipnuk, and Napakiak, where many residents are now sheltering in schools and community centers. In response, Direct Relief is working with the Alaska Native Heritage Center, Incorporated (ANHC) and other partners to deliver urgently needed aid. Emergency medical packs have been shipped to Anchorage for distribution, with more supplies and personal care items on the way. Direct Relief is also providing $50,000 in emergency funding to support displaced families and cover immediate response costs. Since 2008, Direct Relief has delivered more than $5 million in aid across Alaska, including support during Typhoon Merbok in 2022. The organization continues to reach out and offer assistance to organizations supporting the impacted region and will continue to respond to immediate and long-term needs as they become known. Nearly half of Jordan’s population lives with diabetes. At one of our partner centers, 70% of patients showed dangerously high glucose levels, putting them at risk of serious complications. Thanks to Anera and Direct Relief, a new diabetes and endocrinology unit now offers vital care and free insulin to those who need it most. PQMD

As California braces for a powerful storm fueled by remnants of Typhoon Halong and Tropical Storm Priscilla, Direct Relief is preparing for the potential health and safety impacts across the state. The storm, intensified by tropical moisture and jet stream activity, is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and mountain snow, creating heightened risks of flooding, debris flows in burn areas, and widespread power outages. Direct Relief, with 77 years of experience responding to disasters in California, is working closely with partners and monitoring high-risk areas to ensure emergency medical supplies are ready for rapid deployment. Severe weather often disrupts ongoing medical care, from storing temperature-sensitive medications like insulin to maintaining access to essential equipment. By pre-positioning aid and coordinating with local health centers and clinics, Direct Relief aims to reduce health risks for those most vulnerable to disruptions. In addition to emergency preparations, Direct Relief continues investing in long-term resilience. Through its Search and Rescue Fund, the organization has provided more than $1.1 million to volunteer teams statewide, while resilient backup power systems have been installed at 21 healthcare sites to keep clinics open during outages. 🌐 Advancing Data Governance for AI Innovation — Insights from the 2025 New Commons Challenge 🤔 Last month, during UNGA Week, in collaboration with Microsoft, Direct Relief/CrisisReady, and Institutional Data Initiative at Harvard we convened global leaders to explore how data commons can strengthen the foundations of AI for the public good. ➡️ The event showcased not only this year’s New Commons Challenge winners but also a rich discussion on how governance, interoperability, and trust must evolve if AI is to truly serve humanity. 💬 What We Discussed 1️⃣ Data Commons as the Missing Infrastructure for AI As I argued, we live in a world rich in data but poor in accessibility. “Without shared governance and interoperability, data remains an untapped asset.” Data commons are public infrastructure — enabling equitable access, stewardship, and reuse of high-quality, context-specific data essential for ethical and effective AI. 2️⃣ From Responsible AI to Responsible Data Teresa Hutson (Microsoft) reminded us that AI’s value depends on the quality and diversity of the data it draws from. Her call to action: move from focusing solely on responsible AI toward ensuring responsible data ecosystems that reflect cultural, linguistic, and geographic diversity. 3️⃣ Aligning Data and AI Governance Globally In a fireside chat, Isabel de Sola Criado (United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies) emphasized that data governance and AI governance are two sides of the same coin. She highlighted how the Global Digital Compact embeds data commons as a concrete mechanism for closing digital divides and preventing a future AI divide. 4️⃣ Building Trust Through Shared Stewardship Speakers noted that incentives and trust are crucial for sustaining data sharing. As Isabel observed, “every organization asks—what’s in it for me?” Clear value propositions and trusted intermediaries are key to ensuring equitable and transparent governance. 5️⃣ Partnerships for Digital Progress Closing remarks by Alex Wong (ITU) and Robert Opp (UNDP) reminded us that digital transformation is not just about technology—it’s about collaboration. They called for investing in data quality, interoperability, and capacity-building to make digital public goods work in practice. 🏆 Celebrating the 2025 Winners 💧 Instituto CERTI Amazônia – Amazon Rainforest Evolution Index: AI-ready environmental data to monitor deforestation and land use across Brazil’s Legal Amazon. 🗣️ NYU Peace Research and Education Program – Malawi Voice Data Commons (with Ushahidi, UNDP, Mozilla): multilingual, community-reported emergency data to improve humanitarian response and preserve local languages. 📖 Read the full recap; https://lnkd.in/eZgKhRYa #DataCommons #ResponsibleAI #DataGovernance #PublicInterestAI #UNGA #DigitalPublicGoods #GlobalDigitalCompact #AIforGood #Interoperability

A critical medication for infants who need respiratory support has arrived at 10 hospitals in Lebanon. Nonprofit Anera has delivered Beractant-Survanta, a critical lung surfactant for premature infants born before 34 weeks, to the NICUs of 10 public hospitals across the country. The medication, donated by Direct Relief, helps babies born prematurely to breathe until their lungs are strong enough to do it on their own. The donation is the most recent shipment of this life-saving medicine, covering the national need for five months and estimated to save the lives of 150 newborns, increasing survival rates by at least 45% compared to similar treatments, according to Anera. Direct Relief has provided more than $261 million in medical support to Lebanon since 2009. https://lnkd.in/eeNyJC_Q
