“Fusco places art before politics, using photographs, videos, and performances to address social issues in nuanced and poetic ways.” In her full-length review, Financial Times' art critic Ariella Budick guides readers through 'Tomorrow, I Will Become an Island'—the first U.S. survey of the “blazingly erudite” Coco Fusco, now on view at El Museo del Barrio. Spanning more than three decades of Fusco’s work in video, performance, and writing, the exhibition—curated by Susanna V. Temkin—"serves as a calming retort to the intransigence and demonization that have scorched American politics." Read the Full Article Here: https://on.ft.com/42xfOAp Accompanying the exhibition, El Museo will host a night of Cuban poetry on October 9, and a film screening of Miguel Coyula's "Crónicas del Absurdo" on November 20. We hope you can join us!

So great to see Bill Aguado and BCA board members Leenda B., Rhina Valentin, and Eileen Newman in attendance. "Combative, comedic, poetic" That’s how The New York Times chief art critic Holland Cotter describes the work of Coco Fusco in his review of 'Coco Fusco: Tomorrow, I Will Become an Island,' curated by Susanna V. Temkin and currently on view at El Museo del Barrio. In his full-length review, Cotter guides readers through the entire exhibition—spanning more than three decades of Fusco’s work in video, performance, and writing—with close attention to themes of exile, surveillance, censorship, and artistic defiance, especially in the context of postrevolutionary Cuba and postcolonial identity. The show, he writes, "starts beautifully, quietly," and ends the same way: "poetically... though I like to think that quietude is not its takeaway." “When Fusco makes work—confrontational performances, videos, photography, writing—she’s not driven by an urge to self-document. She’d rather shine light on the issues that provoke her.” – Madeline Leung Coleman In a conversation with Madeline Leung Coleman of Vulture, Coco Fusco discusses her life and career, from her beginnings as a “pawn in an international Cold War game” to her three decade-long career as a multidisciplinary artist whose practice—incisive, provocative, and thought provoking—spans performance, video, photography, and writing, confronting urgent political and social issues.
