Empo Health® is addressing the diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) that affect 25% of all diabetic patients in their lifetime and lead to 150K amputations/year in the US ($80B+/yr in DFU healthcare spend). The FDA-listed Empo® Footprint in-home imaging scale and accompanying Empo® Remote Health Link patient monitoring service empower patients, podiatrists, and payors to detect early signs of ulcers and intervene at the right time, when it’s least invasive and most cost-effective.

Thank you, Eric Dahlseng for your insights, trust and for being an incredible partner.
- 150 K lower-extremity amputations annually
- 50% mortality rate within 5 years of an amputation
- $80 B in healthcare costs annually
This is the staggering reality of diabetic foot ulcers in the US, with 20 million patients at risk due to diabetic neuropathy (loss of feeling in their feet). Too many of us know friends or family members whose lives have been forever changed by preventable severe ulcers.
That’s why Eric Dahlseng and I founded Empo Health five years ago (nearly to the day): to help empower patients, providers, and payors to prevent these diabetic foot amputations. After years of rigorous development and successful pre-commercial validation, we’re thrilled to announce that we’re officially launching the Empo® Footprint in-home imaging scale and Empo® Remote Health Link patient monitoring service to market!
We’ve just issued our first press release, highlighting our product launch and $15 M raised to-date: https://lnkd.in/dMZeGUwT.
I’m incredibly proud of the mission-oriented dedication of the Empo team to reach this point. And this wouldn’t have been possible without our visionary investors including Story Ventures, Ulu Ventures, SeaX Ventures, Arben Ventures, Gaingels, and VTC Ventures (associated with our partners at Carilion Clinic), along with the community at StartX.

On an annual basis, 100K individuals living with diabetes will have an amputation, and within five years of the procedure, around 50% will pass away.
Accounting for one-third of all diabetic healthcare costs annually (estimated $40B), diabetic foot complications continue to manifest in a significant number of diabetes patients.
For every ten patients, five will lose sensation in their feet (diabetic neuropathy), leading to one quarter of the patients developing a diabetic foot ulcer in their lifetime and an increased risk of amputation.
Many of the complications are preventable and/or effectively treated with early detection, but the current methods to detect early signs of complications are cumbersome and less effective.
Fortunately, there are Founders who are building solutions.
I am pleased to share the conversation that I had with Anuj Khandelwal, Co-Founder and CEO of Empo Health, in which we discuss his vision to make early detection as easy as stepping on a scale.
After receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University, then spending time early in his career at Amazon, Anuj founded Empo Health with Eric Dahlseng.
Empo Health’s mission is to improve patient outcomes for diabetes patients with an in-home health monitoring device that allows patients and podiatrists to conduct visual inspections of the patients feet on a daily basis.
During our full conversation, Anuj and I discussed:
- Anuj’s Early Passion for Engineering
- Founding Empo Health
- Current Methods to Diagnose and Treat of Diabetic Foot Ulcers
- The Empo Footprint™ and The Empo Remote Health Link™
- Empo Health’s Early Pilot Results
- Championing Podiatrists, Empowering Patients, and Empo Health’s Future

Watch Anuj and I discuss how The Empo Footprint™ and The Empo Remote Health Link™ helps patients conduct daily visual self-inspections by quickly scanning and rendering clear, full-color images of their feet, providing both the patient and clinician with better information to improve diabetic foot care.
