  • Andrea Samuels came to our Encompass Health hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana after a stroke and a severe seizure. He was extremely weak, making mobility and walking difficult. Our therapists worked closely with Andrea, challenging him with obstacles and dual-task activities. With his musical background, Andrea progressed in motor planning and control through drumming sessions. He also enjoyed throwing a football, which helped strengthen his core stability and dynamic control. Andrea is deeply thankful and becomes emotional when talking about his recovery. We are so proud of you, Andrea, and thrilled with your progress and discharge home!

  • When Chris Daughtry was 16 years old, he was in a car accident that would change his life — and eventually his career path. He fractured his spine and could no longer walk. He required intensive therapy to adapt to his new circumstances. After inpatient rehabilitation where he worked with physical and occupational therapists, Chris was able to rebuild his life. He went on to pursue a career in occupational therapy, knowing firsthand the difference one can make in the lives of those recovering from a serious illness or injury. Today, he's director of therapy operations at our Greenville, South Carolina rehabilitation hospital where he's living proof that with the right rehabilitation and care, you can get back to your life and what matters most after a life-changing injury.

  • Izzy came to our Encompass Health hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia after a stroke left him paralyzed on his right side. He was unable to walk or perform basic self-care tasks. Izzy’s family had an upcoming cruise scheduled, which motivated him to work hard in therapy. Through an intensive rehabilitation program and rigorous family training with his devoted wife, Annie, Izzy regained the ability to move his right side, walk, navigate stairs and complete a full range of daily living activities. It was great to see Izzy enjoying the cruise with his family — a unique discharge destination made possible by his incredible recovery!

  • Armando was admitted to our Encompass Health hospital in Miami, Florida after a pressure washer explosion left him with severe burns. With 28% of his body affected, his recovery became a powerful example of strength and perseverance. From the start, Armando approached rehabilitation with determination, inspiring staff and fellow patients. His wife stood by his side every step of the way. He reports significant improvements in pain management, range of motion and muscle strength, allowing him to become nearly independent with daily activities. We are honored to celebrate his success and cheer him on as he continues his journey.

  • Swallowing may seem like a simple, natural action, but after a stroke it can become challenging. Dysphagia, the medical term for difficulty swallowing, is a common complication for stroke survivors. As a national supporter of the American Heart Association's Together to End Stroke initiative, Encompass Health clinical experts partnered with the AHA/ASA to create this video explaining the causes and symptoms of dysphagia, as well as treatment options for those experiencing swallowing difficulties after a stroke.
