New York Commission Chair Rory Christian, CEM, CEA, the New York State Department of Public Service, and NYSERDA are showing the way by recognizing the value and importance of load flexibility in addressing energy affordability challenges. New York’s initiatives are helping EnergyHub’s collaborators use virtual power plants (VPPs) to successfully manage rapidly increasing demand for clean electricity. We look forward to working together to continue to deliver reliable, affordable, and increasingly decarbonized power to all.
New York’s load relief programs are currently providing 1.58 GW of demand reduction during periods of peak electricity use. These programs play a critical role in: - Reducing stress on the electric grid - Minimizing wear and tear on critical infrastructure - Avoiding costly capital investments - Empowering customers to lower their own energy bills The Commission recently approved the annual Dynamic Load Management Order, acknowledging year-over-year growth in existing load management programs across the State, and the important role of load flexibility today and in the future. Residential customers have enrolled 100MW of appliances in existing programs, making their energy use more affordable and enhancing system efficiency. Looking ahead, New York’s energy efficiency and demand reduction initiatives are projected to reduce peak demand by approximately 5.6 GW by 2035. Flexible load is a key component of a modern, resilient and efficient grid, and is providing real value to New Yorkers today, with benefits growing steadily over time.
