EU's bridge to stronger regions. Fostering cohesion and growth through territorial cooperation in Europe and beyond

About us

Interreg, the European Union's instrument for facilitating cooperation among regions and countries within Europe and beyond, plays a vital role in advancing regional development, fostering cohesion, and mitigating economic disparities. Interreg programmes cover different territorial areas, organized under four strands: - European Cross-Border Cooperation - Transnational Cooperation - Interregional Cooperation - Outermost Regions’ Cooperation These Interreg programmes serve as engines for project partnerships aligned with the key objectives of the EU's cohesion policy for 2021-2027: • Promoting a more competitive and smarter Europe • Supporting a greener, low-carbon transition towards a net-zero carbon economy and a resilient Europe • Enhancing connectivity across Europe • Encouraging social inclusion and a more equitable Europe • Bringing Europe closer to its citizens Additionally, there are two specific Interreg objectives for the period 2021-2027: • Improving cooperation governance • Promoting a safer and more secure Europe

  • Interreg Knowledge Fair kicks off the plenary session with Moray Gilland and Jean-Pierre Halkin, from DG REGIO, moderated by Jelena Stojovic, from Interact Programme. “Cooperation between Europe and Member States is more necessary than ever. With unprecedented geopolitical, economic, security, and environmental challenges, we see that countries can’t tackle these issues alone. Climate change doesn’t stop at borders, economic shocks ripple across regions, and security threats demand coordinated responses. In this context, working together is not a choice – it is a necessity. The European Union has a long history of fostering cooperation and collaboration. We can think about institutions, specialised bodies, and programmes – yet territorial cooperation remains truly unique and essential. It is geography in action, connecting regions and cities.” — Jean Pierre Halkin From reform dimensions and performance-based approaches to proposed changes and improvements, everything is on the table. How can we make Interreg more relevant, more visible, and more important? How do we deliver Interreg through cooperation, ensure its political relevance, and shape its Interreg Plan within a wider political environment? These are the discussions now unfolding. With this plenary, we’ve set them in motion. Because to make cooperation stronger, we must adapt and respond quickly. We are flexible, we are drivers, and we are ready to move forward. 💪 #Interreg #CohesionPolicy
