Excel proves that children’s ability to succeed in high school, college, and beyond is not determined by zip code.
About us
Excel Academy was founded in 2003 with the mission to provide a high-quality education to students in East Boston and Chelsea Massachusetts, communities that are predominantly low-income and Latinx and historically have faced significant social and educational barriers. Our success in Massachusetts is proof that the opportunity gap can be closed. At Excel Academy Charter Schools, we believe that when a student has the support and tools to pursue a productive post-secondary pathway aligned to their personal identity and values, it can fundamentally change their life trajectory. Over the years, we have grown from one middle school to a network of four schools with 1,400 students in grades 5 to 12. In the fall of 2022 we will welcome a founding class of 5th graders to help us launch Excel Academy Rhode Island. By 2032, Excel Rhode Island will run 4 schools serving over 2,100 students from Providence, Central Falls, and North Providence. We present our students with educational experiences that allow them to grow and discover their best selves so that when they leave our halls, they can successfully navigate all of the post-secondary options available to them. At Excel Academy we learn from our students, families, and staff and make improvements. We have increasingly adapted to provide a holistic education that values our community as collaborators in the learning process, social-emotional support, equity for diverse learners, and fosters identity development. We prioritize an approach that is both rigorous and inclusive. Our team of passionate, intelligent, driven, and loving staff are at the core of the work we do. Growth Happens Here.

Today we visited Excel Academy in North Providence, a charter public school serving students in grades 5-8. Utilizing a $25,000 RIHEBC Capital Grant Program award, Excel Academy was able to build out a new conference room, teachers staff room, and additional classroom space. We're proud to help Rhode Island's health & educational organizations meet their facilities needs and their missions.

“...everyone who makes a difference in their environment starts by envisioning a reality better than the one that already exists.” - Leading With Heart & Soul by Irvin Scott I’m stepping into a new season of growth: beginning graduate school at the Harvard Graduate School of Education while also starting my role as Dean of Curriculum and Instruction at Excel Academy Charter Schools Both opportunities have given me space to envision that better reality. At HGSE, I’m learning equally from my professors and my peers from around the world, and at Excel, I’m seeing what it looks like for each school’s needs to drive the support they receive. I’m excited to continue leaning into my purpose and to bring those lessons back to the work of shaping what’s possible for both students and teachers.

At Excel, community comes full circle. 💙✨ We’re proud that 11% of our staff are Excel alumni who chose to return and grow the same supportive, inspiring environment they once experienced as students. They lead in roles as lead teachers, a Dean of Culture, Director of Talent, Director of Student Recruitment, Teacher Fellow, and more. That’s the power of living out our commitment to community — generation after generation.

“I wanted to work at a school where students were learning grade level content and could be successful in AP classes. I chose to work with younger students because the earlier you can teach students the skills they need to know to be set up to access grade level content, the better.” - Mr. Cabral, Middle School Social Studies teacher at XLC

We are excited to welcome new teachers who are passionate about learning and growth, both for students and their own careers. Listen to some of our new teachers (and some Excel alums!) share why they chose to join our community: the chance to contribute to a culture built on continuous learning, collaboration, and professional development all in service of our students and community.
