At Finemind, we know that those who care for others also need care themselves. Counselors give so much of themselves to support others through life’s challenges, and we believe their own well-being is just as important. The emotional demands of this work are real, and sustaining high-quality care means making space for your own mental health, too. Prioritizing your well-being might look like carving out time for self-care, reaching out to colleagues or mentors when you need support, or simply staying connected to the things that bring you joy and a sense of purpose. Join our community of counselors who are committed to showing up for others and for themselves. Let’s support each other, always. #CounselorsCare #WellbeingMatters

We lift up communities by providing mental health services that nurture hope and belonging.
About us
Finemind lifts up communities by providing mental health services that nurture hope and belonging. Our curriculum focuses on equipping local trainees with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to offer effective psychosocial support for individuals struggling with depression and anxiety. Access to mental health care is a fundamental human right. It is not luxury, nor is it discretionary - it is vital. Mental healthcare affords someone the basic tools to take better charge of one's needs and to live a purposeful life. If depression is present and not addressed, it affects other necessary life functions. Finemind's impact doesn’t end with the individual; the real transformation happens when the community is lifted, too. We firmly stand by the adage, “There is no health without mental health.”

In addition, to using validated tools like the PHQ-9, WHODAS, and HRQoL-14 to measure impact across mental health symptoms, daily functioning, and overall quality of life, we've also started measuring WELLBYs! Stay tuned for the exact numbers, but estimates suggest that for every $1,000 spent, we achieve around 50 units of improved wellbeing!
What is the best way to conduct high impact happiness research? At the Happier Lives Institute, our focus is on the WELLBY. One WELLBY represents a one-point increase in wellbeing on a 0-10 scale for one person over the course of a year. This metric allows us to identify our recommended charities based on how much happiness they create for the money they spend. Also adopted by the UK and New Zealand governments, WELLBYs are becoming increasingly relevant on the international stage. Learn more about how they can make your donations more impactful in our new video! #HappierLivesInstitute #WELLBY #Happiness #HappinessResearch #HighImpact

Our stepped care intervention is a simple, three-tiered approach to mental health care: Step 1: Interpersonal Counseling (IPC): Clients start with short-term counseling focused on addressing immediate emotional challenges, such as stress or relationship issues. Step 2: Problem Management Plus (PM+): For clients needing more support, PM+ offers structured, evidence-based counseling to help with depression, anxiety, and practical problem-solving. Step 3: Specialist Referral: If additional care is needed, clients are referred to mental health specialists for advanced treatment. This model ensures each person gets the right level of care for their needs, making mental health support accessible, effective, and scalable.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness in Our Community We're honored to share a heartfelt welcome from our District Representative to the Finemind counselors who regularly visit our community to provide vital mental health support last year. In a powerful speech, the District Representative emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and the impact that Finemind's work is having in our region. "Mental health is just as important as physical health," they said. "We're grateful for the dedication and compassion of the Finemind team, and we look forward to continuing our partnership in promoting mental well-being in our community." A Message of Appreciation We're grateful for the District Representative's support and commitment to mental health awareness. Their words of welcome and encouragement mean a lot to our counselors, who work tirelessly to provide mental health services to those in need. Let's Continue the Conversation Let's keep the conversation going about mental health awareness and the importance of seeking support when needed. Together, we can create a more compassionate and supportive community.

Meet Paska, a dedicated health worker in Agago, who goes above and beyond to provide mental health counseling services to her community. Trained by Finemind, Paska selflessly sacrifices her free time to visit community members, listening with compassion and empathy. Paska's Story: "As a health worker, I've seen the impact of trauma and hardship on our community. But I've also seen the power of hope and resilience. Through Finemind's training, I've been equipped to provide mental health support, and it's been life changing not just for me but for the people I serve." Finemind's Impact: Through Paska and many others like her, Finemind is making a tangible difference in communities across northern Uganda. Our organization is committed to integrating mental health services into primary care, nurturing hope and belonging in areas that have suffered greatly. By supporting Finemind, you're not just funding an organization, you're empowering individuals like Paska to create lasting change in their communities. #MentalHealthMatters #CommunityEmpowerment

Finemind joined hands with midwifery students to host a community event that touched us all in a very personal way. As the students shared, the painful rise in intimate partner violence is not just about broken homes it is about broken spirits, wounded minds, and the silent suffering carried within our communities. Through drama, we witnessed how something as common as alcohol abuse can unravel families where a parent is consumed by addiction, a child is left without school fees, without meals, without hope and a partner facing violence, and the hidden scars that weigh heavily on mental health. These stories reflect the lived realities of many around us. Realities that lead to rising suicide rates, neglected children, and a cycle of pain that often goes unseen. At Finemind, we believe that by speaking openly, by naming the pain, and by standing together, we can begin to heal. Mental health is not separate from these struggles, it is at the heart of them.
