The Geospatial Data Interoperability Platform, detailed in the Smart City Reference Architecture (SCRA) 2nd Edition by IPA: Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan, is a powerful example of how open standards and cross-sector collaboration can unlock truly smart and resilient urban ecosystems. At its core, this platform addresses fragmented data landscapes, fostering interoperability across urban planning, disaster management, mobility, and other related areas. FIWARE plays a key role, linking dynamic context information—like real-time sensor data—to this geospatial backbone. How FIWARE fits in: 🔹 Seamlessly integrates real-time data (e.g., parking, disaster response) via the NGSI-LD Context Broker. 🔹 Bridges dynamic sensor data with static geospatial data through Spatial IDs, enabling context-rich smart city applications. 🔹 Supports trusted, open, and vendor-independent solutions, aligned with Evidence-Based Policy Making (EBPM) and sustainability goals. FIWARE Context Broker is recommended as a non-personal data broker module for all the platforms. This collaboration exemplifies the global relevance of open digital commons in addressing local challenges, boosting innovation and ensuring communities have equitable access to data-driven decision-making. FIWARE participates in the O-CEI project with 57 fellow partners from 20 countries. Decentralized infrastructures, like Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) networks, are driving up data and computing power demands, as well as energy consumption, costs, and emissions. O-CEI tackles these issues by creating an open CEI platform for real-time data sharing and collaboration across sectors, aiming to boost energy optimization solutions. We are excited to contribute to this project, leading the Marketplace activity and participating in O-CEI uptake activities. 💧 At the FIWARE Global Summit in Rabat, Morocco, our colleague Ángeles Tejado presented the IDEATION project during the session “Blue Cities of Tomorrow: AI & IoT for Smart Water and Resilient Cities.” IDEATION eu, an EU-funded initiative, is shaping the roadmap for a Digital Twin of Inland Waters, mapping diverse ecosystems from rivers and reservoirs to wetlands and urban waters — all aligned with Europe’s broader Digital Twin Ocean vision. COGNETs seeks to transform Intelligent Infrastructure Management through a scalable and interoperable distributed Middleware Framework. This framework will enable autonomous IoT-to-Cloud computing and will be sustained beyond the project's duration by the FIWARE Foundation (Technical Project Coordinator) and a robust EU-JAPAN industrial and academic ecosystem. The project's core concept involves extending IT intelligence to enable devices to recognise their diverse characteristics and autonomously determine how to create dynamic IoT-Edge-Cloud networks. Data Sovereignty and Decentralised Identify Management of the Edge information cover an important role in the definition of the network communication, moving to the definition of Data Space in Edge-Cloud environment. These networks will facilitate collaborative AI tasks and significant cognitive computing operations based on Federated Learning and splitting of the Deep Neural Network in an automated, secure, and energy-efficient manner. 🌍 aerOS Project at FIWARE Global Summit 25 in Morocco – Spreading the Word About European Innovation! At the FGS2025, the aerOS project proudly took the stage to showcase how European initiatives can drive global impact. During the FIWARE training session, FIWARE Senior Technical Expert Jason Fox introduced participants to the principles of registration and federation within the FIWARE ecosystem—paving the way for meaningful cross-border collaboration. Following this, Ken Zangelin, FIWARE Senior Technical Expert, delivered an insightful talk on the aerOS project. He presented aerOS as a real-world example of federation in action, demonstrating how innovative technologies can seamlessly connect diverse systems, communities, and geographies. aerOS is a European research project (Horizon Europe CL4-2021-DATA-01-05) running for 3 years which aims at transparently utilising the resources on the edge-to-cloud computing continuum for enabling applications in an effective manner while incorporating multiple services. The overarching goal of aerOS is to design and build a virtualized, platform-agnostic meta operating system for the IoT edge-cloud continuum. FIWARE is a part of a consortium in this project and participates in the development of architecture for the IoT edge-cloud continuum.
