From Brain Drain to Brain Gain: A Historic Gathering at Stanford 🇵🇭🇺🇸 What happens when you bring together Filipino founders, funders, and builders from across the nation during Filipino American History Month? ✨Magic. Last Friday, October 3rd, the Filipino American Community at Stanford, PhilDev Foundation and Dream Bigger Squad co-presented “Bridging Filipino Founders & Funders” — and the turnout exceeded all expectations. Kababayan traveled from multiple states to be part of this pivotal conversation about transforming the Filipino diaspora narrative. 🚀The Mission: Shift the story from brain drain to brain gain. With roughly one in ten Filipinos living or working overseas, we gathered to explore how diaspora talent, capital, mentorship, and research partnerships can catalyze high-value jobs, homegrown startups, and globally competitive industries in the Philippines. 📣The Energy: From honest conversations about opportunity gaps to inspiring stories of impact, the room buzzed with possibility. Our phenomenal speakers Elisa Nguyen, DNP, RN, CMSRN, Eric Valle, and Kendra Viloria delivered powerful insights on mobilizing not just remittances, but relationships, know-how, and long-term capital. Our founders Gia Carrascoso, John Paul Balingit, Michael A. Agustin, Audie Vergara brought their A GAME for the Founders Live segment of the program. I’ve never called myself a Founder. It’s a word I’ve always associated with tech start-ups, venture funding, apps, entrepreneurs and innovation labs. Not… sales training. But lately, I’ve been coming to terms with the term. I’m doing a Founders Live pitch (tomorrow night), and in the lead-up, I recorded a podcast with Ryan Toppin where we talked about how I got started and where I'm heading. And it turns out I have built something, Sellabilities Pty Ltd, and I am going to keep building via The Sellabilities Sisterhood. A new community for women who hate the idea of selling their services, but want to feel confident doing it their way. So why does the word “Founder” still feel like it doesn’t quite fit? Maybe because sales training is a crowded space? Maybe because there’s so much noise about AI, automation, and scale whereas what I do is help humans get better at talking to other humans? But here’s what I’m starting to realise: You don’t have to have a tech platform or investors to be a Founder. You just have to have found something: an idea, a business, a community, something that didn’t exist before. ✳️ The Sellabilities Sisterhood is a new community we are building for female, small business owners who need to learn how to sell.
