Transforming mental illness recovery through community and advocacy.

About us

Millions of Americans living with serious mental illness are denied access to care and support in the community, and end up cycling through our streets, shelters, emergency rooms, and jails. For far too long our punitive, ineffective and costly approaches have taken away their capacity, dignity, and humanity. For more than 70 years, Fountain House has believed in people living with serious mental illness - who are our sons, daughters, mothers and fathers, friends and neighbors - and has proven that they can reach their goals and aspirations for a better life. Fountain House works. Our members are hospitalized and experience crisis significantly less than others with serious mental illness, resulting in 21% lower Medicaid costs. Approximately 38% of our members experience homelessness or unstable housing when they arrive at Fountain House, 26% come with a history of incarceration and justice involvement, and 31% join with a substance use disorder. Our members complete their education, find paid work, and achieve health and wellness goals at significantly higher rates than people living with serious mental illness who don’t have access to our programs.

That’s a wrap on JED’s third-annual policy summit in Washington, D.C. 🎉 National leaders across #MentalHealth, education, philanthropy, policy, and youth advocacy united to advance sustainable solutions and protect the emotional well-being of young people at “Meeting the Moment: Sustaining Progress in Youth Mental Health.” Dozens of attendees considered the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and the role of legislative policies — on the local, state, and federal levels — in shaping mental health support, investments, and resources for students in the digital age. The summit began with an inspiring introduction and framing of the moment by Dr. Zainab Okolo, LCMFT, JED’s senior vice president of policy, advocacy, and government relations, who reflected on the national policy landscape and what it means to sustain progress, and debuted JED’s new policy framework, AI Policy Levers for Youth Mental Health. Conversations continued on new national data, which offered hopeful signs and declines in depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts among both teens and young adults from 2021 to 2024. Participants also talked about how youth mental health and suicide prevention progress and impact are being challenged following federal budget cuts, like those to Medicaid, adjacent supports, school-based programs, 988 crisis line services, youth-specific resources, and more. Technologies, such as AI, were also discussed in various panels as posing both promise and threats to youth mental health and well-being. A big thank you to our featured speakers, panelists, and participants, including Michael Satow, JED’s board chair; Congresswoman Becca Balint (VT-AL); Senators Alex Padilla (D-CA), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT); Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, president of the Child Mind Institute; Rafael Campos, MBA, MPP, MPS, former deputy director of public engagement at the Office of the Surgeon General; Nicole “Nikki” Clifton, president of The UPS Foundation; Kody Kinsley, former Secretary of Health and Human Services for the state of North Carolina; Dr. William A. Smith, chief executive administrator at Huntsman Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah; Hollie Chessman, director & principal program officer at American Council on Education; Jennifer W., senior director of policy & communications at Fountain House; Dr. Tony J. Walker, PhD, JED’s senior vice president of school programs and consulting; Dawn Thomsen, JED’s senior vice president of youth strategies and chief engagement officer; Martha Sanchez, JED’s director of policy; and others from Active Minds, Inc.; American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; Annie E. Cassie Foundation; Common Sense Media; Gates Foundation; Mental Health of America; One in Five; RAND Social and Economic Well-Being; State Higher Education Executive Officers Association; Third Way; Trellis Foundation; and more. 📸 Check out highlights from the event here: https://bit.ly/47tOUMz

HONOREE ANNOUNCEMENT: 📢💚 Fountain House is pleased to share that we’ll be honoring Mr. Gregory Baecher, Chair of the Fountain House Board of Directors, as the 2025 recipient of the Esther Montanez Leadership Award. 💚📢 The Esther Montanez Leadership Award was established for the woman whose leadership and dedication were instrumental in the founding and growth of Fountain House Gallery & Studio. A bold leader, the late Esther Montanez was a tireless advocate for people living with serious mental illness. At the time, her vision of an art gallery, where artists working and living with serious mental illness could display their talents and engage with the broader community, was unique. Through her unrelenting vision, will and charm, Esther’s work contributed to making the Fountain House Gallery & Studio a central program for Fountain House. It is said that true leadership must be for the benefit of the followers, not the enrichment of the leaders. Like Esther, Greg exemplifies this ideal. We are proud to award this year’s Esther Montanez Leadership Award to our friend, Mr. Baecher, in recognition of his years of outstanding leadership and service. Mr. Baecher joined the Fountain House board in 2016 after beginning his relationship with Fountain House over 20 years ago through his late aunt. He became Chair of the Board of Directors in 2022 after co-leading the search committee for the organization’s next CEO, Ken Zimmerman. Working closely with Ken, the executive team, and the Board of Directors, Mr. Baecher has led the Board during a period of growth and transformation for Fountain House as it seeks to scale its impact. Gregory Baecher is a Partner at Arctos Partners. He oversees the firm’s capital solutions group and helps lead corporate strategic initiatives. Prior to joining Arctos Partners in 2024, Mr. Baecher was a Partner at Warburg Pincus LLC, the global growth-focused private equity investor, where he spent 20 years in various roles including investing, strategy, fundraising and investor relations. He started his career at JPMorganChase. Mr. Baecher graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University, where he received a BA in Economics with High Distinction. Join us in-person on Thursday, November 13 at Chelsea Industrial to recognize Mr. Baecher’s unwavering service as we celebrate 25 years of Fountain House Gallery & Studio and the artists and supporters who are reshaping how society understands serious mental illness. Original works created by Fountain House Gallery & Studio artists will be on view and available to purchase. Fountain House and Fountain House Gallery & Studio led a free, in-person panel exploring key insights from thought leaders and organizations that promote the creative arts as a force for healing and societal change. Moderated by Rick Luftglass, executive director of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, this session examined the intersection of arts, health and well-being, and explored the crucial role that creative expression plays as a vehicle for recovery. The panel was held as a part of UNGA Healing Arts Week by the Jameel Arts & Health Lab. The week mobilized a local and global coalition of artists, health leaders, researchers, policymakers and community members that activated the arts as a powerful force for health and wellbeing. Now in its third edition, the festival ran alongside the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), transforming iconic venues and neighborhood spaces across all five boroughs into sites of creative care, cultural participation, and public health innovation. The panel was hosted in the WPA David Margolis space of The Bellevue Hospital Center.
