Friends of the Urban Forest

What a fun community 🌳 tree planting we had in Potrero Hill! A wonderful group of 50+ volunteers grew Potrero Hill’s tree canopy by planting 42 trees. In spite of some of the rockiest serpentine basins we’ve ever encountered, we planted every tree we set out to put in the ground! Special thanks to our partners at Accenture for providing valuable resources and volunteer energy for this project. We also want to give a shout out to our nonprofit partner, the Potrero Boosters, for bringing a great group of volunteers. We are also so grateful to our committed Planting Leaders: Anthony, Josh, Joshua, Lauren, Pai, Pete, Peter, Sam, Stephanie G, and Stephanie N! And congratulations to our newest Planting Leaders who completed their training at this planting: Edward, Frank, Garrett, and Rob 💚. Some of the tree species included in this planting were fruitless olives (Olea europaea), strawberry trees (Arbutus 'Marina'), cajeput/paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia), native ceanothus (Ceanothus ‘Ray Hartman’) and fernleaf Catalina ironwood (Lyonothamnus floribundus), as well as some impressive flowering Illawara flame trees (Brachychiton acerifolius) and jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia). Spring is a perfect time to refresh sidewalk gardens 🌼🌿! Huge thanks to the 45 volunteers from SC Johnson who came out during Earth Month to plant pollinator-friendly, drought tolerant sidewalk gardens in NoPa. Nearby, Vince Yuen of Refuse Refuse led volunteers in removing trash from the sidewalks and streets 🗑️. We had such a great planting with the fun folks from United Airlines! They planted 11 trees in the Bayview including California lilac, cabbage tree, littleleaf linden, fruitless olive, sweet bay laurel, and primrose 🌸. Want to plant trees with your team? Planting trees is just the 1st step in a street tree’s life. They also need to be mulched 🍂 and pruned ✂️. Their roots need nurturing 🌱. And sometimes their structural support needs to be bolstered 🔨. Did you know that Salesforce Park is 5.4 acres and home to 600 trees 🌳🌳🌳? Yup, it has everything from Brisbane box to African sumac to Monterey cypress to flame trees to ginkgos. Pretty cool, huh? Last week we partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and Arcadis to host an amazing tour of the trees of Salesforce Park led by Mike Sullivan. Mike is a former Friends of the Urban Forest board president and the author of The Trees of San Francisco. If you’ve never been before, head on out to Salesforce Park (it’s a public park) and enjoy this tree-filled urban oasis!
