We often assume our desires are self-made — but many of them are shaped by what we see through others. René Girard calls this mimetic desire. In this first article, I explore how wanting from windows—seeing what others have—can subtly redirect our longings. Luke Burgis names the models we look through: freshmanistan (those close to us) and celebristan (those far away). Both shape us. The question is: Are we choosing them well?
