In Senegal, farmers like Tahirou Diop are growing climate-resilient rice—increasing incomes and strengthening livelihoods. With access to climate-smart innovations, farmers don’t just grow food—they grow opportunity and help their communities thrive.
About us
Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, we work with partners to create impactful solutions so that people can take charge of their futures and achieve their full potential. In the United States, we aim to ensure that everyone—especially those with the fewest resources—has access to the opportunities needed to succeed in school and life. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Mark Suzman, under the direction of Bill Gates and our governing board.

Girls around the world dream of going to school, earning a living, and having a healthy life. And when they can pursue these dreams, everyone benefits. Families are stronger, and communities thrive. Saturday was International Day of the Girl Child. Over the weekend, I reflected on the progress that has been made towards supporting equal opportunities for girls. I am hopeful a future is near where every girl has the chance to realize her dreams. #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild

Germany continues to demonstrate its leadership in global health with a €1 billion pledge to The Global Fund. The Global Fund is one of the best investments we can make to save lives, boost economies and grow our global health security. To date, the fund and its partners have already saved 70 million lives from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. My thanks to Reem Alabali Radovan and the German government for this new support that will be essential to helping the Global Fund make even more progress in the fight against these deadly diseases.

With over 70 million lives saved since 2002, The Global Fund partnership shows what’s possible when governments, civil society, and communities work together. Funding the Global Fund now will save millions more lives and protect decades of global health progress. Hear from the Gates Foundation’s Cynthia Mwase and other people whose stories reveal the human impact of AIDS, TB, and malaria—and why sustaining this fight matters more than ever. https://gates.ly/4ovbryz

Why do we need sustained global health funding? Because of neglected tropical diseases like schistosomiasis. Caused by microscopic worms in local water supplies, this parasitic infection, also known as bilharzia, is estimated to affect 200 million people worldwide every year. If left untreated, schistosomiasis can seriously damage the liver and intestines, cause infertility, and even lead to bladder cancer. Despite these severe symptoms, schistosomiasis is given little to no funding or attention. Thanks to Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, there are solutions like praziquantel. But it's expensive to make, and resources to distribute the drug are scarce, so it's not consistently available to those who need it most. Eradicating diseases like schistosomiasis and other #NTDs is good for humanity and economies. But to do so will require sustained commitment and global funding. Remembering when Jane Goodall joined our chair Bill Gates, with other leaders and visionaries from around the world, to talk about the Global Goals at a Goalkeepers gathering in 2019. Jane showed the world the power of compassion and courage in action, and her legacy will continue to guide us–and all those she inspired–as we work toward a healthier, more hopeful future for all.
