Today marks the 45th anniversary of the U.S. Staggers Rail Act, which deregulated the freight rail industry and subsequently fostered significant private investment to create a safe, efficient and sustainable mode of transportation for businesses across our country. For G&W, the Staggers Act presented a tremendous opportunity to acquire and lease low-density rail lines, rehabilitate them and restore them to profitability. We would not be the company we are today without it! #Staggers45

Yesterday, G&W team members gathered with Grand Rapids Eastern Railroad (GRE) customer, King Milling, to celebrate the impact of infrastructure grants from Michigan DOT’s Office of Rail—a powerful example of public-private collaboration fueling Michigan’s economy. King Milling utilized the Freight Economic Development Program (FEDP) grant, while GRE used the Michigan Rail Enhancement Program (MREP) grant to upgrade rail infrastructure supporting increased freight rail traffic for King Milling’s recent flour milling expansion project.   Fun Fact: Rail was connected to the mill in 1899, nine years after the flour mill was constructed in 1890. The rail line was originally part of the Pere Marquette Railroad, a legacy of rail supporting Michigan industry for over a century!   The event included a tour of the flour mill - WOW was it impressive, not only the technology but meticulous cleanliness! Our team also had great discussions on how these investments are strengthening supply chains, providing jobs, supporting local businesses, and enhancing freight efficiency across the region.   The team was honored to be joined by representatives from Michigan DOT, local government, Michigan Agri Business Association, and King Milling. I was recently reading my AAR Signal newsletter where an analysis by University of Dayton Professor Michael Gorman caught my eye – I’ve put a link to the article in a comment below. Without going into all the public policy he discusses, Dr. Gorman shines a light on freight railroads and how railroads primarily invest in their own network maintenance programs versus other modes of freight movement that rely on public investment. I’m really proud of that aspect of this industry I work in.    As a member of the Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s Industrial Development team, I get to educate our economic development and site selection partners on the benefits of G&W freight rail – the private investment, ESG benefits and how hard we are working on safety and service.   G&W’s ID team works with all of our 100+ railroads across 43 states and provide site selection and project management for our current and potential customers looking to find a site, transloading location or expand an existing facility. We work with the economic development and site selection industry to assist with rail needs. We are always looking for ways to connect and assist. Check us out at https://lnkd.in/eFwHB_Kx. Have a safe day.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month... Did you know Spanish-speaking communities created unique words and expressions tied to the railroad that are still used today? Traquero (from track + -ero)  refers to a railroad worker and is still used in Mexican American families to honor ancestors who worked on the rails Ferrocarrilero (from ferrocarril, meaning railroad)  a common Spanish term for railroader that became part of union and everyday identity in Latin America La vía (literally meaning “the track”)  used in daily speech to describe neighborhoods or lives shaped by the railroad (e.g., “vivimos por la vía” — “we lived by the tracks”) ---------- ¿Sabías que las comunidades hispanohablantes crearon palabras y expresiones únicas relacionadas con el ferrocarril que aún se usan hoy en día? Traquero (De “track” + -ero)  se refiere a un trabajador ferroviario y aún se usa en familias mexicoamericanas para honrar a los antepasados que trabajaron en las vías. Ferrocarrilero (De “ferrocarril”),  un término común en español para ferroviario que se convirtió en parte de la identidad sindical y cotidiana en Latinoamérica.
