🤽♀️Athletes Are Leveling Up - Beyond the Game!⛹️♂️ At the University of Miami’s 8th Annual Chief Sustainability Officer Summit & Symposium, athletes, agents, investors, and changemakers gathered to explore how sports intersects with entrepreneurship, sustainability, and social impact. From NIL strategies to community engagement, the message was clear: today’s athletes have the platform—and responsibility—to build brands, businesses, and movements that last. 💬 “Presence is huge… There’s no blueprint, but you have to be intentional,” said Michael Raymond of Raymond Representation. ⚽ Former pro athlete Tommy Thompson echoed, “The shut-up-and-dribble era is over. 🌍🏈 From Dissolvable Straws to Oyster Reefs: How the NFL Is Tackling Environmental Impact National Football League (NFL) Green is proving that the power of sport can drive real environmental change, on and off the field. From removing invasive snails in Arizona’s Salt River to building living shorelines from recycled oyster shells in Louisiana, the NFL is using its platform to address pressing ecological issues in Super Bowl host cities and beyond. 🏞 In Phoenix, a unique collaboration with FORCE BLUE and OdySea Aquarium mobilized 500 volunteers to protect the Salt River’s ecosystem. 🌊 In New Orleans, 59 tons of restaurant oyster shells were transformed into storm-buffering reefs near Leeville. 🌱 Teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks are leading the way: - 99% landfill-free stadiums - Compostable straws and ponchos - Closed-loop food waste systems that grow the next season’s fries - Solar energy powering entire games And this isn’t just about game day. Through food recovery, community greening, and stadium sustainability, the NFL is moving toward year-round impact, and starting conversations that reach millions. As Roger McClendon of the Green Sports Alliance put it: “The future of sport is at risk in a climate-changing world. The session will explore ISO 20121 and will demystify the international standard certification process, including gap assessments, planning, stakeholder engagement, and audits, and highlight real-world success stories. The session will also introduce the GSS Sustainable Pillars framework and explore practical first steps that sports organisations can take to begin or accelerate their sustainability journey. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in open discussion and Q&A with the speakers. The highly interactive, deep collaboration planned for the Cape Town meeting of Sports 20 is fuelling my energy to continue ahead in the face of difficult headwinds. Greatly looking forward to rolling up our sleeves together, stitching the existing resources together, gleaning more critical insight directly from voices from the global south and forging organizational bonds that will stay the course no matter how difficult.
