Achieving water quality and quantity objectives with practical, forward-thinking solutions that return lasting benefits.

About us

Since 1951, Hazen and Sawyer has focused on two things: providing safe drinking water and controlling water pollution. Our range of services encompasses the planning, design, and construction management of water and wastewater-related projects – from clean water treatment, storage, and distribution to wastewater and stormwater collection, treatment, and reuse. Our focus brings us exceptional challenges – such as the largest drinking water UV disinfection installation in the world, upgrade of major wastewater treatment plants to reduce nutrient discharges to sensitive receiving waters, and recharging vital drinking water aquifers with highly-treated wastewater effluent, renewing a valuable resource. Our focus also makes us home to many of the world’s most knowledgeable and experienced environmental engineers and scientists, each seeking a challenging and rewarding career while making an important contribution to the communities in which we work. Our expert process groups contribute to the latest research and determine how to apply the most effective and efficient technologies to engineer solutions to your challenges. Your goals are our goals, and we offer the insight and experience needed to achieve and exceed them. If you have a water engineering challenge, Hazen and Sawyer has your solution.

  • October 16, 2024. This was the deadline when water suppliers were required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to start notifying customers about known and suspected lead service lines in their systems. As we reflect on this date from just over one year ago, we want to celebrate the tremendous work that our clients achieved to not only reach this milestone, but also take significant action to protect the health of their communities. As utilities continue to navigate the lead and copper landscape in anticipation of upcoming regulatory deadlines, communication with customers remains key to success. Read our article about how utilities have unlocked opportunities for improved trust and collaboration through their lead and copper communications: https://lnkd.in/dFqd_fUi 📸 Credit: Louisville Water #allthingswater #LCRR #LCRI

  • Water is connected to every facet of our daily lives—from the food we eat to the energy we use, the natural landscapes we enjoy, and the businesses that fuel our economies. Imagine a Day Without Water is an opportunity to reflect on all the ways we depend on water and to raise awareness about the communities and populations that lack access to this vital resource. We encourage you today (and every day) to consider the importance of ensuring safe water for all and the ways that every person can help make that goal a reality. • Partial nitrification-denitrification-anammox (sometimes called PANDA 🐼) is a powerful technology to help utilities more effectively and sustainably remove nutrients from wastewater. 🔎 Hazen has been investigating the effectiveness of PANDA in numerous studies across treatment stages and configurations for over ten years. In our latest research, we’ve uncovered a consequential new method of mainstream anammox application at full-scale, taking the potential benefits of PANDA to the next level. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gqHrmbtw 📸 Below: A conceptual illustration of colonies of anammox, the microorganisms at the heart of successful PANDA systems. #allthingswater

  • As regulations on nutrient limits for wastewater treatment continue to evolve, finding cost-effective methods for managing nitrogen and phosphorous is top-of-mind for many water resource recovery facilities. See how two Hazen pilots—one focusing on densified activated sludge (DAS) and another testing partial nitrification-denitrification-anammox (PANDA) downstream of a high purity oxygen activated sludge (HPOAS) system—showed the potential to unlock significant savings for nutrient removal facilities: https://lnkd.in/eiKV46V4 📸 Credit: Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts #allthingswater #WEFTEC25

  • 📚 Water and wastewater operators rely on long-established textbooks to prepare for their certification exams. But this resource does not currently exist for advanced water treatment, posing a challenge as more of these facilities are developed across the country and in need of a well-trained, highly skilled, and certified workforce. ✏️ Hazen is working with the California-Nevada Section American Water Works Association to bridge this gap and develop a comprehensive textbook and study materials to help operators prepare for the Advanced Water Treatment Operator (AWTO®) certification exam. Learn how these resources will support operators and contribute to the success of advanced water treatment programs: https://lnkd.in/g-JyxEa6 #allthingswater #reuse
