Vaccines matter. Get a flu shot! For at least a dozen years, every October, Health Care for the Homeless has partnered with local businesses and health care providers on our annual Flu Vaccine & Coat Drive. It’s not a “drive” to gather these things — but to give them to our neighbors experiencing homelessness and housing instability. Get a flu shot and a winter coat! We served 130+ people today (10/14) with another clinic lined up tomorrow (10/15). Many thanks to students from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, HCH clients & staff, Constellation, MITZVAH FUND INC, Bikemore, Wegmans Food Markets Hunt Valley, Bombas and everyone who makes this possible.

“You start with housing…” On Thursday 10/9, Maryland Housing Secretary Jake Day announced 2025 LIHTC awards. In this clip he lifts up the department’s focus on permanent supportive housing & homelessness preferences while powerfully making the case for including everyone… by starting with housing. Let there be housing! We got the exciting news today that the development team of Episcopal Housing Corporation, HCH Real Estate Company & Beacon Communities LLC received Low Income Housing Tax Credits (9% & 4%) from Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD)/CDA to develop Sojourner Place at the Falls, a combined total of 117 affordable apartments. Combining new construction and renovation at the site of two downtown hotels, Sojourner Place at the Falls will include 92 units of Permanent Supportive Housing for people exiting homelessness with onsite supportive services provided by Health Care for the Homeless. Today’s news follows extensive partnership with the City of Baltimore, the Baltimore Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services, Baltimore City Department of Housing & Community Development, Housing Authority of Baltimore City, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Enterprise Community Partners, Moseley, Southway Builders, Inc. and many more. https://lnkd.in/evEvJVwB As Secretary Jake Day said at the announcement, “If you want to end homelessness, start with housing…” Housing is foundational. Housing is health care. Housing is recovery. Housing is healing. Housing is home.

For anyone working in health & human services right now, the environment is paralyzing & hostile to growth… Grow anyway. (And check out this compelling 15-minute conversation between Joshua M. To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Health Care for the Homeless, I’m running through the park – and I’d be honored if you’d join my team. WHAT’S HAPPENING? The Rock your Socks to Health & Home 5K takes place the morning of Saturday, November 1, 2025 (registration at 7:45am; race kick-off at 9:00). Sport your brightest running socks and join us for a 5K (or 1 mile “Family Fun Run”) through Baltimore’s beautiful Patterson Park. (Run, walk, stroll or crawl!) In honor of our 40th year, we’re leaning into an 80s theme (so do with that what you will.) Registration is $35 if you meet the “early bird” deadline before October 1 and $45 after that. I’m confident we can run a few laps around the modest team fundraising goal. WHAT DOES IT SUPPORT? Health Care for the Homeless is Maryland’s leading provider of integrated health services and supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness. Find more on our website (www.hchmd.org) where you can learn about our services, read up on our new street medicine program, and check out a recent article in the New York Times on our supportive housing work. All Rock Your Socks proceeds support our essential mission. And at no time over the past four decades has raising private funds been more important than right now. JOIN MY TEAM: The team name is Running up that Hill—referencing a favorite 80’s tune from Kate Bush, the constant reminder that we’re not getting any younger, and the hills we climb in our work and in this moment. However you relate to the team, I hope you’ll join me in supporting the important work and mission of Health Care for the Homeless. Register here. Click “join a team” and look for Running up that Hill. Hope to see you at Patterson Park on Saturday, November 1. Onward we go. https://lnkd.in/exCcMQqt

“Homelessness isn't a crime. Treating it like one only sets us back.” Lifting up this powerful op-ed from USA TODAY by Albert Townsend, director of Lived Experience & Innovation for the National Alliance to End Homelessness. As Mr. Townsend reflects, “Every day, I am thankful that I got off the streets. But it wasn’t from a jail cell, and it wasn’t at the direction of law enforcement. I wasn’t a criminal, and I didn’t need “reforming.” I was homeless, and I needed a home.” Homelessness is fundamentally a structural problem in need of structural, public policy solutions.
