Barri Shorey, lead on our Disaster Relief and Recovery program, is once again championing the case for locally led cash assistance. Backed by decades of evidence, cash assistance has proven to be the fastest, most effective way to deliver aid. At this critical turning point for the humanitarian sector, Barri calls on funders to trust local leadership and invest in locally led cash-first solutions. She shares reflections from a recent panel discussion led by CALP Network, where she joined Hilton Foundation partners, including Loreine dela Cruz, executive director of Center for Disaster Preparedness and NEAR (Network for Empowered Aid Response) Network member, and Mercy Corps' VP Global Policy and Advocacy, Kate Phillips-Barrasso. Head of our Catholic Sisters initiative Sr. Jane Wakahiu joined religious women and men from 100 countries for the Jubilee of Consecrated Life, where 16,000 pilgrims attended mass with Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter’s Square. In an interview with Vatican News, Sr. Jane said it was a “sacred occasion that encourages renewal, deeper connection to faith, and a beacon of hope to the world... As religious during this Jubilee of Consecrated Life, we are joining together, and we serve as witnesses of love and hope in the margins of society where we serve." Investing in girls’ education affirms their right to learn, live with dignity, and shape their own futures. For Catholic sisters, education is essential to protect girls from harm and help them unlock their full potential. Abigail Chapewa was forced to leave school when her parents couldn’t afford the fees. With sponsorship from the Bakhita Partnership for Education, and support from their Project Coordinator Sister Bertha Chisanga, she’s now the head girl at St. Patrick’s Secondary School in Mazabuka, Zambia. Bakhita empowers girls in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia to overcome barriers like poverty, early marriage and domestic burdens. Abigail’s story is one of many showing how sisters are helping girls stay in school and lead with confidence. #InternationalDayoftheGirl

In New Orleans, children experience PTSD at four times the national rate. Takyra, a peer mental health worker with the Children's Bureau of New Orleans, helps young people understand that caring for their mental health is key to reaching their goals. Through the Peer Mental Health Navigator Program, opportunity youth connect with peer mental health workers who share their lived experience. These community-rooted models meet young people where they are, helping them access care and guiding them to take the next steps toward their education and career goals.

Last night we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize at the Waldorf Astoria— a special place in my heart where my family’s legacy and global impact converge. It was wonderful to be back at the Waldorf and an honor to share the stage with so many amazing speakers to celebrate the spirit of humanitarianism. The event was also an opportunity to recognize this year’s Prize laureate, Mines Advisory Group, an outstanding organization that exemplifies what we can achieve when we lead with compassion. Let’s continue uplifting those driving progress for a better world ! #HiltonFoundation #HumanitarianPrize

Earlier this week, I had the honor of celebrating three decades of humanitarian leadership as the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize returned to the Waldorf Astoria in New York. For 30 years, this Prize has recognized remarkable organizations whose courage and dedication illuminate a path forward, even amidst unprecedented challenges. In times when the world urgently needs hope and solutions, these organizations have stood as beacons—proving that collaboration, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to improving the human condition truly drive progress. This year, we proudly recognized MAG (Mines Advisory Group) as the 2025 Hilton Humanitarian Prize recipient. Their life-saving work removing landmines and explosive remnants of war has restored safety, dignity, and opportunity to countless communities affected by conflict. We celebrated their achievements—alongside all our Prize laureates, colleagues, and members of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation board—reaffirming our shared resolve to invest in organizations that strengthen communities and lead with compassion in a world that needs humanitarian leadership more than ever. #HiltonHumanitarianPrize
