What would spaces look like if designed from a feminine perspective? This question brought together 50 people at the HUSH offices late last year for an an “unconference” hosted in collaboration with WIN: Women in Innovation. Our director of strategy Athena Diaconis reflects on the event, and summarizes the key themes and takeaways from its multiple breakout sessions in the article below.

At the end of last year I had the privilege of co-hosting an unconference with WIN: Women in Innovation at our HUSH offices. The focus? To explore a question, “What would spaces look like if designed from a feminine perspective?” While it’s a topic that should be quite benign (“feminine” is merely a cluster of characteristics and values) in today’s landscape it feels charged. And, while what we unpacked truly only scratches the surface, it seems more important than ever to share, in the hope we continue to believe in the power and value of including many voices and perspectives in shaping our world.

HUSH senior designer Dione Lee offered her wisdom to students ready to enter the workforce during a panel titled 'How to Land Your Dream Job,' as part of the Adobe Creative Retreat in NYC. Read her summary and advice below!

How exactly does one land their dream job? That’s a (complex) question that myself, fellow panelists Vipul Chopra and Katie Kalupson explored during our discussion at the recent Adobe Creative Retreat in their Times Square office. We touched upon a lot of related topics, including the often-tough realities of working in the design industry, and how a first job probably isn’t going to be a dream job. Because it takes time to learn the ropes of the professional world, figure out strengths and weaknesses in a team environment, and what your definition of a dream job actually is. Vipul spoke about work-life balance and the shifting idea of a dream job. In his own experience, he found that although he was doing great work in a particular role, it just wasn’t sustainable to keep enduring late nights at the studio. This idea of sustainability isn’t something many junior designers might think about early in their career, but burnout and exhaustion simply doesn’t lead to good work. Thankfully, in an age of hybrid work, flexible hours and more empathetic employers, there’s now many more ways to negotiate that balance. Katie importantly noted that AI should never be used to replace real problem-solving skills, because that's really the last frontier of what it means to be a designer, and is at the core of what we do. To me, this addressed a lot of anxiety around the potential replacement of designers by AI: while tools are and will always be fungible, design thinking is more akin to muscle that will stay with you as long as you work it. We also discussed the importance of paying it forward (because no one is ever too junior to do that), and treating peers with generosity and respect in the age of growing competition and scarce opportunities. Now, more than ever, it's important to find ways to generate and maintain genuine and meaningful connections in your networks. Most dream jobs come via people you already know! Special thanks to Norman Borgonia and the folks at Adobe for organizing, and RAN ZHENG for moderating the panel. I had the best time! Photos by Tanel Leigher

HUSH partner Erik Karasyk participated in an engaging and insightful panel discussion at SXSW earlier this month, focused on leveraging GenAI tools to modernize marketing workflows. The event was organized by our friends at SoDA: Society of Digital Agencies and hosted by Adobe, whose Firefly tool we’ve been harnessing to create large-scale visuals based on real data for our DEVCO installation project. The discussion touched on the exponential progress AI has recently made, but comparatively slower adoption of these new tools, the legal complexities of AI and potential models for solutions to pressing IP issues, and which are the most exciting developments in this field today.  “These tools have almost been like a new kind of sparring partner for our creatives,” Erik says. “For us, combining some of the agentic workflows, with multiple tools and agents, that's been really a big unlock for the projects that we're working on.” In presenting real applications of GenAI in projects, he highlighted our ongoing work for DEVCO, and the importance of building trust with a client when using experimental tech. “You have to have a client that's willing to take the journey with you, and have a visionary attitude. Many people are still nervous [about AI], and a lot of companies have pretty strict restrictions on what they can use internally. But this client in particular was very open to it. We presented a compelling vision, and they were on board.” Big thanks to fellow panelists Dustin Callif of Tool of North America and Jameson Proctor of Athletics, and moderator Hannah Elsakr from Adobe, for such a great conversation! In the first of a series of insightful conversations between Paul McConnell, co-founder of Noble, Certified MBE, and Athena Diaconis, our director of strategy, the pair discuss the evolving role of experience design in shaping transportation spaces. They also unpack the balance between aesthetics and function, the power (and limits) of space in driving change, and how tech and data can make environments more adaptive and effective. The big takeaway? Experience design is a strategic mindset that can be engaged to create spaces that evolve, connect, and actually work for the people using them. The conversation was moderated and edited by writer, editor and creative consultant Dan Howarth. Read it below! #design #experiencedesign #transporationdesign #airports

⚡ Fusion energy has the potential to power the world, and real breakthroughs are happening now. We had the incredibly opportunity to dive deep into this transformative space with Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), one of the leaders in the fusion energy race. 🟠 The result? The Ring—an art commission designed to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of energy stewards. Our mission was to translate the hidden complexities of fusion energy into a bold and useful storytelling expression. 👀 The Ring brings the unseen into view—scaling down the massive physical infrastructure behind fusion and using light and movement as a narrative tool. Each detail in the installation has meaning, from the D-shaped light elements representing the powerful magnets that drive fusion engineering, to a trio of lighting sequences that visualize the opportunity, ecosystem, and roadmap for this revolutionary energy source. 🌍 Sustainability was core to this project, as it is for many of our endeavors. We specifically sought a minimal, light-based design to avoid excessive energy consumption and a material reuse strategy that reflects those materials captured from CFS’s own electromagnet production. 🤝 It was a privilege to learn directly from CEO Bob Mumgaard and his visionary team and to contribute our small part to a mission that’s shaping the future of global energy access. Power up by checking out the full case study on our site! https://lnkd.in/ggzVKxVr 💡 Also, if you’re curious about the future of fusion energy, we highly recommend Bob Mumgaard’s recent panel at the World Economic Forum. https://lnkd.in/g7Femf4m #HUSH #FusionEnergy #DesignForImpact #Sustainability #ArtAndTechnology

In first week of our Adobe Firefly R&D sprint, Erik Karasyk and his team learned a lot right off the bat. They gained an understanding of exactly which data to feed into their AI content pipeline, and based on early results, how they needed to refine the prompting model to achieve the desired visuals for display in DEVCO's forthcoming life-sciences hub, The Helix. More details below!

Continuing HUSH’s dive into Adobe’s Firefly tools, our first week's challenges were deciding on data to curate and feed into our fledgling AI content pipeline. In order to produce the dynamic visual results we’re aiming for, we recognized the need for an articulate and targeted prompting system. We also designed a collection of images that would help define the bounds of our aesthetic-sandbox, while providing examples of undesired outcomes. With a large collection of published resources from Rutgers University, we evaluated the performance & results between the API’s of Deep Research, NotebookLM, and Claude to contemplate this data. We asked for summaries of course, but also tasked these tools to conduct a complex comparison and ranking… looking for surprising and unifying themes, prevalent techniques, and common keywords—Cardiovascular, AF Genes, Marine, Policing, Phonology, and Crystal Growth—then we put high-ranking results through our Firefly prompting tool. This allowed us to automate and explore a focused array of results, combining keywords from related fields of science and research. Predefining a prompting template (very much like a procedural MadLibs solver) enabled us to precisely steer Firefly’s outputs via their text-to-image API, generating a series of visuals, some of which are seen here. Based on these results, we quickly saw where we needed to improve our prompting model to focus on refining styles and textures while avoiding specific subjects or unsightly shapes. We’re having fun honing in on micro and macro structures, playing with light and shadow, and translating these into motion. Looking forward to sharing the next round of results, let us know where you’d like to hear more details! #Adobe #AIDesign #BiotechArt #BioArt #CreativeAI #InnovativeDesign #LifeSciences
