Today we advance the transition to a clean energy future! I am thrilled to announce the creation of @Inertia and the continuation of my life’s work developing fusion. The successful demonstration of the world’s first controlled fusion ignition and target gain >1 in 2022 @Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was a game-changer. It proved that there was nothing fundamentally limiting harnessing fusion for clean energy. It’s also remarkable how far we’ve continued to improve this result in the last few years. Together with Jeff Lawson and Mike Dunne we have a clear path to scaling key technologies, tackling remaining challenges, and accelerating the commercialization of these results.  Bringing this approach to market will transform the industry and open a path towards potentially limitless clean energy. Today we take a big step in the delivery of fusion power. I’m excited to share the news of the launch of Inertia, a major new venture based on the most direct path from the achievement of fusion ignition to commercial energy. Together with Dr Andrea (Annie) Kritcher and Jeff Lawson, we have co-founded this new company to combine the transformative results from Annie and her team at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) with modern semiconductor laser technology and mass manufacturing approaches to fuel target production. Together we seek to convert decades of research into a reality to the benefit of all. This is the future of clean energy. I invite you to join us in our journey and be a part of our work.

Today I’m excited to announce my new venture: Inertia Enterprises. Along with my co-founders Andrea (Annie) Kritcher and Mike Dunne, our mission is to commercialize fusion energy with the most direct, lowest-scientific risk path available. I’m sure you heard about the huge scientific milestone in 2022 when Lawrence Livermore National Labs achieved “fusion ignition” – the first time a fusion experiment created energy. Standing on the shoulders of giants, we see a clear path from this big science experiment to commercial energy by scaling up laser inertial fusion. The hardest part of fusion energy is, and has always been, plasma physics. Heating atoms to hundreds of millions of degrees in a controlled way turns out to be very hard. But Annie and the team at Lawrence Livermore have now proven the basic science of fusion ignition. Now it’s a matter of scaling up. To succeed, we’ll need to build the world’s most energetic laser, develop the manufacturing basis for low-cost fusion targets, and bring these and more together into a fusion pilot plant. We are Inertia, and we are launching today to commercialize fusion energy based on the pioneering work at Lawrence Livermore National Lab, the only fusion experiment to achieve fusion ignition and target gain. Equipped with world-class expertise spanning science, engineering, technology, and business, our team will take the most direct, scientifically-proven path from what is working today at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to commercial energy. We are developing a new generation of mass-produced, low cost lasers and fuel targets to scale up the groundbreaking scientific result of fusion ignition to levels needed for commercial energy. This safe, potentially limitless energy source uses the same process that powers the sun and can operate at all times of day with minimal waste and no emissions.    By scaling up the industrial base needed for laser inertial fusion, we see a clear path from big science to commercial energy.
